Questions for “How to Read Like a Writer” 9/6/22

Please read “How to Read Like a Writer” by Mike Bunn and write a response to the questions below. You can answer on the document that I emailed you, but in the future we will begin posting on the class Open Lab site so we can comment on each other’s answers as well.  If you have created an Open Lab profile, you can answer these questions by replying to this post.

  1. What did you think of the piece? Did you like it? Or not? Why. Explain! (Don’t worry my feelings won’t be hurt! Be honest!)
  1. What tips or ideas did you learn about how to Read Like a Writer? How might you apply it (use it) when you read?
  1. Can you explain what you think the author means when he says, “When you read like a writer, you are trying to figure out how the text you are reading was constructed so that you learn how to ‘build’ one for yourself” (74). Be specific. Share a personal example, if possible.
  1. Let’s think about the “context” of this text. What is the author (Mike Bunn’s) purpose in writing this piece? Who is his intended audience?

    1.I like the piece because it states a lot about how to read like a writer, which enlightened me a lot, I think the idea of what I should think about when I read helps me in my future reading.

    2.Reading carefully and slowly, while thinking about why the author will use “this” or “that” technique to express his idea. Those might help me get closer to the author’s thoughts during reading. 

    3.It means every good author’s writing would decide their purpose to write and intended audience, based on that, they select their word chose, writing style, genre. Then the writing becomes like building a house, you have your base, then build your idea on that base. I do not have much personal experience on this idea, but during my writing, I often do not have a clear aim, I just write down what appears in my mind at a sudden moment one piece to another piece, it is not good as a writer. 

    4.The author’s purpose is to reveal that there is a connection between reader and writer. Moreover, he gives advices about how to read like a writer. The intended audience might be readers, writers, students, teachers.  

    5.The genre of this text is persuasive writing. 

    6. I noticed that Mike Bunn often used student’s opinions to teach us how to read more like a writer. It is probably because Mike Bunn believes that their opinions are more acceptable and understood by audiences.

    1. I like the essay because it was pretty interesting and easy to understand. Also, it helps us a lot to understand why we should start focusing more on the way a text is written than on what it appeared to say. This is really important for students because we are learning how to persuade our audience with our writing and how to make them understand our ideas.
    2. One tip I got from the essay is that I should analyze more the vocabulary choices of the author and the context of the writing in order to understand better the writing.
    3. What I understand from the quote is that as readers we should pay more attention to the way the author wrote the text than what he/she is saying if we want to understand the text. As Bunn said, is like building something. You watch other people doing it, and you learn from them how to do it so you can use their techniques in your own piece or at least start thinking if you want to use them or not.
    4. His purpose is to teach the readers a better way to read that will be more efficient and make it easier to understand a text. Also, he made this to help the readers improve their writing skills. His intended audiences are college teachers and students.
    5. The genre is an essay, it states it several times throughout the text.
    6. The text was a little bit relatable, the author uses a lot of his personal experiences and past thoughts to allow the audience to put themselves in the position of the author. He also included his former students’ advice to help the current college students.

    1, The piece was good because it teaches us another way of seeing things another way of reading and writing. I did like the piece because it gives a new point of view on how to use new tactics for reading and writing.

    2, A tip I learned from how to “Read Like a Writer” is to identify the genre of the text we are reading for us to better understand what we are reading.

    3, What the quote means is that something when we read a textbook from an author, as readers we try to construct our own way of writing or techniques using some of the ideas we got from the text we read and turning them into our own strategy to fit our needs.

    4, The author’s purpose in writing this context is to inform other readers how to implement new ways of writing and reading and how to craft our own ways of writing, and the intended audience is the students, and readers.

    5, The genre that is being used in this text is

    6, I noticed that the text was somewhat based on a story at first before there were these ideas that were shared later.

    1) What did you think of the piece? Did you like it? Or not? Why. Explain! (Don’t worry my feelings won’t be hurt! Be honest!) 

     I enjoyed Mike Bunn’s piece because it helped me to better understand what reading like a writer means and how to do it correctly so the reader of my text could enjoy it better. 

    2) What tips or ideas did you learn about how to Read Like a Writer? How might you apply it (use it) when you read? 

    I learned that reading is more than just understanding the content of the text, it is about understanding how the text was created, what methods and techniques the author used and how I can use them myself. I learned that I need to focus on the audience who I’m trying to reach. I learned that word choices can really impact your writing and how people perceive it. 

    3) Can you explain what you think the author means when he says, “When you read like a writer, you are trying to figure out how the text you are reading was constructed so that you learn how to ‘build’ one for yourself” (74). Be specific. Share a personal example, if possible. 

    What the author is trying to say is that knowing what techniques the author used and how he/she used them can help you in creating great writing yourself. You could adopt the techniques and skills the author used to improve your writing and reach a bigger audience. For example, if the author used metaphors in their writing and that grabbed your attention, then you could implement something like that in your own writing. 

    4) Let’s think about the “context” of this text. What is the author (Mike Bunn’s) purpose in writing this piece? Who is his intended audience? 

    The purpose of the author’s piece is to guide his audience (writers, readers, students, professors) on how to achieve the best writing possible by implementing techniques from other writers in their own. 

    5)What is the genre of this text? It’s okay if you don’t know! Just give it a shot! (Essay, article, poem, etc.) 

     I believe the text is an essay, because in various parts of the text he states it is. 

    6) What did you notice about HOW this text was written? Choose one observation  

    I noticed that it was written in a very engaging way that attracts more than just the intended audience, and it is easy to comprehend and adapt what we learned in our own texts.

    1.I like the text. I like the way writers explain which step in detail about how we can write and read like a writer. It also gives us an example of how we read and write like a writer and how we can used different techniques.

    2.the tip i learned from the text is to read carefully and slowly word by word. and to question how and why writer wrote that.

    3.i think this means how can i get inspire form the text i am reading and how can i use one of the technique in my own writing.

    4.So, the intended audience was students and the people who are interested in reading or writing. The purpose of writing this text was to give new ways and techniques.

      1. Yes, because the author used his own experience to tell us how to make writing and reading more funny and interesting.

      2.An idea I read about this article is find a reading style that you comfortable and interesting in, then you can read used your heart.

      3.We must learn to how to understand the meaning of the author’s writing, from the author’s perspective to read what he read.

      4.The author purpose in writing this piece is students writer and reader, he wants reader to find some funny things in reading and writing, and teach us how to write an essay like a writer.

      6.I think just read used your ways that you feel relaxed, and find the writing skill, read the book with your heart.

    1.I love this piece. I think it’s humorous, funny and easy to understand. So that I can better understand the knowledge about writing.

    2.I learned from this article that we should analyze the article and understand the author’s own ideas and opinions.

    3.What I understand from this sentence is that when I read as a writer I need to understand how a text is constructed, to understand the ideas of the author of the text. So you can learn how to build your own text.

    4.I think his purpose is to let the readers of his articles to understand the way of reading and improve the ability of writing. His target audience should be teachers, students, and people interested in reading and writing.

    6.Regarding the way this article is written, I noticed that the author has been using his manager and some history to describe the article.

    1. I like the piece because it was easy to understand and author explained with details and I think it was well written.
    2. One main idea I learned from this text is that you have to you have to use right word in order for the reader to get your point and the reader should try to understand writers point of you I will keep it in mind when making my own research or writing an essay for classwork or homework
    3. The main point in that text was that you may adopt your writing to the writing of author and take tips from that and use it on your own writing.
    4. The purpose of the author’s piece is to get audience attention and make them interested in what he is writing and share his knowledge of reading like a writer. His audience is students, teachers, artists, writers, readers.

    1.I think this article is very good and I like it. This article allows me to understand the writer better. It also tells us how to write and read better.

    2. One thing I’ve learned is that no matter what you’re writing, you have to clearly express what you want to post, so that readers will know more about what you’ve written.

    3.What I think by author is that when you read like a writer, the goal is to find the writing choices you think are most important in the text, the choices of overall structure.

    4.I think the author’s goal in writing this article is to use new techniques to write and read. Audience (students, professors, readers, writers.

    • I actually liked reading this essay because it had a lot of good points and I learned a lot and I think it has changed the way I’m going to read in the future it has given me a different perspective on reading.
    • I learned that when reading we should look in the ways the writer writes by looking at the structure of the writing, the choice of words and also the audience they’re trying to reach.
    • I think the author means that when we read like writers, we will not only “read” but basically analyze and learn from other writers so we can use their techniques into our own writing pieces and improve our skills.
    • Mike Bunn’s purpose for writing this piece was to teach students mostly college students, which was his intended audience how to improve their writings by reading and analyzing the structure of which a writing piece was written.

    • I noticed how Mike Bunn started this essay with a bit of information about himself and I think he was trying to make this text relatable to college students because he had multiple colleges students input into this essay.

    1. In my opinion I really like the piece because it changed some of my pov of reading and writing all together and It also helps for future readings and writings giving it a different perspective

    2. I learned that no matter what you are writing you should always try to grab a readers attention and make them relate to you someway somehow if not at least make them interesting in what you are writing so they can picture an imagine of what you trying to put out there for people

    3. What I think the author means by when you read like a writer is that not only will you read like a writer but take some key points and analyze how they wrote their writing taking your reading and writing to the next level in the future
