Definition: something that causes extreme physical or mental pain

I over came this word while reading The Brooklyn Bridge by Philip Lopate.

I understood this word after reading this sentence, “After years of torment, she left her husband.” We can tell that maybe her husband abused her and that’s why she left but it doesn’t tell us if its mentally or physically.
