My philosophy of nursing is that nursing is a health care profession that is focused on healing and nurturing patients based on a holistic, and individualized, approach. Nursing is a special profession because it requires an immense amount of assessment, communication, and collaboration. As a nurse, our job is to care for patients by monitoring their symptoms, providing the right treatment, and ultimately help them in preventing or addressing the underlying causes of illness.
When patients are ill, it is a nurses’ job to communicate with their patient, assess for any barriers to their wellbeing, and make connections to the right professionals and resources. Nurses are perceptive and receptive to their patients by recognizing these barriers when they communicate with their patients and listen to their concerns. When nurses are dedicated to treating more than just the physical symptoms of patients, and when they are attentive to the social and emotional needs, they can provide care that address a multitude of factors that is holistic and individualized. A part of the holistic care of nursing is recognizing the many different cultures that exist and understanding how culture can influence their patient’s health. Ultimately, the nursing role is based on the foundation that caring for patients requires addressing many elements of a patient’s life in order to provide a holistic approach to care.
