Trip to Duggal

Trip to Duggal

As a second field trip for our graphic communication workshop class, we went to Duggal Printing Solutions in Manhattan.  I was not sure as of what to expect at first.  Though I am in the advertising major, I do not know much about the advertising industry.  This trip was the eye opener and a preview as to what to expect in the future once stepping into the world of communication design.

Once the whole class was there, the tour guide brought us upstairs, where we saw different kinds of paper to print on.  There are papers with different textures that can affect the colors when printing, such as metallic, glossy, smooth, textured, and rough papers.  Textured papers take away from the colors, whereas smoother paper helps to bring out the colors.  There are also papers that are see-through and can be used to put up in light boxes for places like malls.

The tour guide also told us about things learned in this course, such as color space and color printing.  RGB has a larger color space and is used when creating an image.  An image that is printed will never look the exactly the same.  Images are printed in CMYK format, and whatever the background color is on the paper is considered as the white.  To add white, that is adding a fifth color to he image, also known as five-color printing (i.e. picture above).  We were shown the different kinds of machines that print these images and also machines that help mount images to substrates.

At Duggal, as the tour was being given, it gave a look of what to expect in the field of communication design.  People were at work—at their desks on computers, at machines making paper, printing, and mounting.  It helped give more of an understanding of what to expect when getting a job in this field.  It is a difficult job, especially when someone is very strict and precise with what they want.  Hopefully, I can use what was learned during this trip for when I join the business of communication design.
