After watching the 2012 documentary Herbert Matter’s Visual Language about the life and work of the graphic designer and photographer, please trace the ways that you see the art historical movements we have been discussing in class.
- Look at some of Matter’s graphic design work collected by the Museum of Modern Art, such as his 1935 gravure, 1936 photolithograph, 1930s letterpress and 1949 lithograph.
- Then, analyze what elements of the following art movements you see in Matter’s designs
- Surrealism
- Constructivism
- Bauhaus school philosophy
