My personal philosophy of nursing is that I want to evolve my practice from merely supporting illness to helping prevent it in the long run.  Using Pender’s Health Promotion Model, which increases the level of well being and health promoting behavior, all nurses can put the means of wellness in their patient’s hands.  For those who are already ill, Orem’s Theory of Self-Care Deficit gives the patient the power to heal themselves, while learning what to avoid to prevent further illness.  I believe that nurses should use the principles of fidelity, beneficence, and veracity to set their patients on their own healthcare paths.  People naturally feel better when they are empowered to help themselves, so nurses will give their patients the tools to help themselves, and then guide them the rest of the way.
