I am going to be discussing the symbol for EMS as an example of semiotics. The symbol for EMS is called the ā€œStar of lifeā€. It is the blue star with the snake wrapping around the pole, it represents a means of identification for ambulances. Now the signifier that leads to the symbol itself is the red and white colorway of the ambulance, also the horn. Keep in mind, in many different places in the world, the ambulances can be a different color than in nyc and the horn can be different too. People do recognize that it is an ambulance because of the specific signifiers that lead to the ā€œStar of lifeā€ symbol. So if you live in a different part of the world, youā€™re going to see different signifiers that mean the same thing. That is an example of semiotics in ambulances, something we hear and see on an every day basis being in NYC.

The color way of the ambulance representsĀ  Ā

Emergency, plus the horn of the ambulanceĀ  Ā

Means get out of the way because of how Ā  Ā  Ā

Loud and obnoxious it can be.

This symbol is the ā€œStar of lifeā€

ambulances need to have this

symbol because it represents

Identification for Emergency

Services.
