We are now in the home stretch for the fall semester. You should have a good sense of your course grade up to this point (please check the Gradebook). Speak with me after class about any questions or concerns. All final work for the class will be due by 12/19. This includes the course reflection post on OpenLab the final week, plus revisions to Units 1, 2, 3.
In-Class
- Read Annie Correal’s “Love and Black Lives, in Pictures Found on a Brooklyn Street.”
- Listen to the Podcast, FOUND: “To My Darling Etta Mae
- Discuss:
- 1. What do you notice about the way Correal begins and ends her essay? What effect does this approach have on the reader?
- 2. What are some main ideas in the article? What do you find interesting about the story?
- 3. Choose 2 photos to discuss. Describe what is in the photograph, and explain what why you think it was included in the article (what ideas does it illustrate?).
- 4. How does the podcast differ from the NYT article? What does the podcast genre offer us that the newspaper article does not/ what does the article offer us that the podcast does not?
Final Assignment:
- Continue working on Unit 3! We will review different genre guides together. Google Doc Template to copy and paste into our Class Unit 3 Google Drive folder
- Unit 3 is due in the Google Drive 12/10. Remember you can access the Drive under MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS.
1.The way Correal starts off is with a photo and talked about finding an old photo that was inside of very old photo album relating a couple in the past and she ends it with asking a question on did the photo album end up where it was. It catches the readers attention because with evidence being shown on what’s being talked about gives it more interest in a story or article.
2.Some main ideas is that as time went the neighborhood/ community was changing new people coming in and old time residents moving out. Neighbors reminiscing on the past and the memories they had with couples. What i found interesting is that someone is willing to go all the way to solve such mystery like finding who’s photo album it belongs to.
3. The first photo where it shows its a group of them taking a classic group photo, I think it was included in the article just to show and have memories with love ones, memories that you never wanna forget. The second photo will have to be Etta and her husband taking a picture together while sitting in the grass it was included in the article just to show the love she had for her husband and the importance he meant him and of course memories.
4. The podcast gives us a better feeling or even a better sense than an article. But the one thing the article offer us an actual presentation on what the story is about instead of listening, pictures can be a bigger factor in certain factors.
