My Philosophy of Nursing

Many people when think of nursing, they think of nurses being a profession that takes care of the sick people. Yes, we do take care of sick people, but we do so much more. Nurses play an important role in assisting people throughout their lives, even before they are born. My personal nursing philosophy is related to Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model (HPM). The HPM focuses on helping people achieve well-being. Health care professionals are there to assist people to find resources to bring positive changes for their health and wellness (Pender, Murdaugh, & Parsons, 2011). I think that by resources it is meant not only information, advice and referrals, but also to assist people to find inner strengths and courage.

I believe that all individuals are unique and require individualized and holistic care. We have to take in consideration that each person that we encounter has his or her unique circumstances, feelings and emotions. Even though we follow certain guidelines when taking care of our patients, we should always inquire of patient’s preferences and needs. We have to always treat patients with dignity and respect, regardless of their background and choices.

Ultimately, I believe that most individuals want to be independent and assume responsibility for their own health. It is often hard for people to make life-style changes, but we can assist them by helping them to find the resources and the support needed. I believe that we can help patients to make positive life-style changes by empowering them through education and genuine caring. By educating our patients and taking in consideration their unique circumstances, we empower them to take control other their own health and make positive life-style changes.
