Anna Lisa Raya is both Mexican and Puerto Rican. She lives in El Soreno, a Mexican neighborhood in Los Angeles. When she first attended college in New York she discovered that she was defined as a Latina. Her first year at college, she felt like she was a minority mainly because Latinos always encounter discrimination. But as a young girl she was never the perfect image of a Latina. For example, she was always mistaken for Asian or white. Mainly because of her appearance was very different. Since she wasn’t raised in Mexico she didn’t learn how to speak Spanish. Her mother refused to teach her because it would make her life difficult.
Anna didn’t expect college would be anything like this. As of now she’s trapped to figure out who she really is. Fortunately, she heard about Nuyorican writers that faced problems just like her and how it motivated their writing. She was shocked that as Latinos they encountered the same thing. Anna was given an advice from one of the writers and decided to accept it and try to do what’s best for her.
