Always & Forever

What is the definition of a best friend ? As is illustrated in the poem entitled, “You” by Margery Wang it’s a commitment to the idea that you choose one person you met in your life out of everyone who is the most genuine and trustworthy person you know. Having a best friend is having someone to whom you can tell your innermost thoughts without being criticized and who will always be there for you when needed. True friendship can be rare to find, but when found it can be exceptionally special. Not only is he or she just a friend, but your true friend is also family.

She believes finding true friendship is uncommon and a difficult task to accomplish. Margery Wang’s poem, “You” is speaking to her best friend in a sentimental tone describing their unique friendship together. I think the reason for this is that people are constantly working to approach their own interests in some way, and you can never know the true person inside of someone. For this reason, it was a challenge for her to find someone she could trust . In stanza two, line 3 the poet says, “Genuine friendship is something that I cherish,” meaning people, at heart, are selfish so they’re not many who would go out of their way to help you unless they were to gain from it somehow. So she’s thankful she finally found a friend she can be open up to and express her feelings. She feels fortunate she met someone special who she can call her best friend. Not only does she feel lucky that she has someone great in her life but also satisfied.

Finding a best friend can be exceptionally special and also exciting. In stanza three, line 3, she states, “We have something irreplaceable,” meaning her friendship with her best friend is unable to be fixed, it cannot be replaced. In stanza seven, lines 1 and 2, she states, “You are always there for me” and “When my spirits need a little lift,” with the understanding that having a best friend not only benefits the other person but also yourself. Everyone needs support from someone else other than him or herself. Also, her best friend will never judge her for being herself, she will always be there for her even if they don’t compromise with a decision she made, who will put the same efforts into the friendship as her and who will sacrifice for her when she needs her. The poet is grateful she has someone so extraordinary in her life, that she doesn’t know how to thank him or her. Her best friend never fails to impress her, he or she is always there when needed. The poet has an enormous amount of love for her or him that can never be replaced.

Not only is her best friend just a friend but he or she is also family. In stanza eight, lines 1 and 2, the poet says, “You are everything to me and more” and “I could never express that enough,” illustrating that her best friend means the world to her and she doesn’t know how to show it so that he or she can understand. Without her best friend life would be even more difficult to manage. They’ve been through so much together in such little time that in each passing day she knows everything will be okay because her best friend is by her side. The relationship they have together is extremely significant that she looks at her best friend not only as a friend but someone closer then that-family. In stanza ten, lines 1 and 2, the poet says, “You are so dear to me” and “You know I will always love you until the end,” stating that her best friend treats her respectfully and loved. No matter what the situation is she will always adore her for that. Also, her love and loyalty will never be questioned because she trust with her whole heart that it exists.

Most people take for granted how precious it is to have a best friend and really cherishing it. True friendship is a divine quality. To have a true friend it is a rare achievement to accomplish today. In various cultures people look at friendships differently such as, in East Asia male and female friendships start at a young age and grow stronger through the years of school and working together. In Germany , Germans usually have few friends, even though their friendships last a lifetime. Also, in the Middle East friendship is more demanding when compared with other cultures. Many Arab people identify friendship sincerely. In Margery Wang’s poem , “You”, she describes the unique friendship she has with her best friend and appreciates it. An ideal friend possesses all the qualities of head and heart. It is easy to befriend many but difficult to choose good friends. She reminisces about the first day she met her best friend, remembering how they didn’t have anything to say but that now they’re having fun. With her best friend by her side she lives with relief knowing she will always be there for her. True friendship can be rare to find, but when found it can be exceptionally special. And not only is he or she just a friend but also family.
