LJ10: Please spend 5 to 7 minutes free writing about what factors enable you to write most freely and unselfconsciously.  Is it being in a certain place?  Writing about certain topics?  At certain times of day?  In response to certain assignments?  When you know that you will have lots of time?  When you do not have a deadline?  Writing to a particular audience?  Writing to yourself?  Writing to your best friend?  Some combination of all of these things?

GA10: First, please read “What Is a Bibliography?” (http://homeworktips.about.com/od/citationsandbibliography/qt/bibliography.htm)

Second, read about “The Bibliographic Citation,” what it is, how you can use it, and how to critically understand it (http://library.tamu.edu/help/help-yourself/using-materials-services/critically-analyzing-information-sources.html )

Third, please post 1-3 questions that you have about bibliographic citations or the college research process and RESPOND to at least 2 questions posted by your classmates.

RWA10: Collecting Three Reliable Sources From the Internet

Please read and take notes on the following information about Beginning the Research Process, Evaluating Sources and Searching the WWW created by City Tech library professor Bronwen Densmore:

Finding Information on the Internet Learn now to conduct more effective searches on the open internet.
Evaluating Information on the Internet Learn how to evaluate different kinds of information available online.
Identifying the Source of a Website Learn what to look for in order to identify the source of a website on the open internet.

Second, please read through the following information and COMPLETE THE QUIZ that is included on this site:http://www.vts.intute.ac.uk/detective/index.html

After reading the resources above, please locate 3 reliable sources related to your topic.   At least one of these must be a SCHOLARLY ARTICLE, and at least ONE of these must be taken from a library database.  Magazine articles, newspaper articles, reports, and newsletters published by reliable publishers, organizations, and associations all may be sources that you use for this project.  Once you have located the five reliable sources, save and PRINT a copy of each–if you CANNOT print the article, please make sure you are able to access an electronic copy.  Then, complete the worksheet handed out in class, writing DOWN THE BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION FOR EACH SOURCE USING MLA STYLE GUIDELINES FOR EACH.

FOR NEXT WEEK’S ASSIGNMENT, you will be completing a Research Source Cover Sheet for each source and preparing an Annotated Bibliography. If you’d like to get started completing the research source cover sheets this week, feel free to do so.

  1. Jose Medina says:

GA 10: 1)A Bibliography is a list of books and articles that are used to help people find information for a topic and write down on paper.

    2) The Bibliographic Citation is a written description of a book and journal article that help collects information based on the person’s topic of choice.

    3) Can bibliography be used besides books and articles like movies for example?
When I choose a topic from any author, does the information I find stay the same or different?
Do Bibliographies always have facts or just opinions?

    • Jose,

Any source your use in your research, i.e., movies, video games, interviews, etc., will be listed in your bibliography/works cited. Bibliographies are defined as a list of sources. As a result, I’m not sure how they could include opinion. But perhaps I’m misunderstanding your question? If so, let me know.
