VII. Teaching Effectiveness

Previous: Student Learning Outcomes

Librarians are fortunate to be in a position to receive on-the-spot feedback at the reference desk or when leading information literacy lessons in the classroom. Students can be quite vocal with thanks when you’ve assisted them at a crucial point in the term or offered clarity on an issue which has them stumped. When collaborating with faculty – through info-it sessions, guest lectures, or a more direct peer review of teaching- feedback can come in many forms and with the kind of nuance that can allow for subtle shifts in teaching to incorporate helpful tidbits imparted by colleagues.

Those of us working in technical services, -acquisitions, e-resource management, interlibrary loan and web services – fulfill roles which support the infrastructure of the library and university-wide learning but may go unnoticed as they are not typically public-facing. Collection development and management of the library’s collection form the foundation for the library’s physical monograph collection as well online databases, ebooks and the like which students rely on to compliment and complete their coursework. The relationships forged between library subject specialists and departmental library liaisons are at the core of collection building, my role in managing the acquisition of these resources continues and completes that important work. This is just one of the ways in which library faculty reach beyond the walls of the library.

As the university archivist, I field a variety of queries from on-campus requests for information about City Tech and its history, researchers and information professionals applying for access to our science fiction collection and alumni who need assistance with transfer credit proof to the family of alums who hope we can find their loved one in a yearbook or student newspaper.
