Hi!

Vivian A. Roberts, RN

I am a Registered Professional Nurse currently working in one of the city’s hospital.  I work as a behavioral health nurse on an impatient psychiatric mental health unit.  My future goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner specializing in mental health.

My beliefs and values are always to be at the fore front with kindness, compassion, and equality.  Generate hope and faith through cooperation.  Actively innovate with insight, reflection, and wisdom.  Purposely create protected space founded upon mutual respect and caring.  Embody an environment of caring-helping-trusting for self and others.

Among the things I  see as important to me are seeing a patient I cared for leaving free of symptoms that brought him/her to the hospital; knowing that I contributed to a turnaround in that patient’s state of health.  Putting myself in position where I am mentally and physically ready to provide service to those who depend on me; building a long and lasting trusting relationship with patients and peers.  Knowing that I can be relied on by both patients and peers in any given circumstances.

The ethical values I hold is to maintain patients’ confidentiality; acts as a patient advocate; delivers care in a nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory manner that is culturally sensitive.  My ethical values guide me to be protective of the patient’s interest and to ensure I conduct myself in a manner that is acceptable.

Individual Strengths:

My Individual strength is developed over time after going through pleasant and difficult times.  My strength instill in me a sense of moral integrity, perseverance, doubt without suspicion, loyalty to all, justice and mercy in good grace, with the desire to do the right thing even when it is difficult.  I seek to resist the temptation to practice self-comfort and self-indulgence when they are inappropriate.  In all my doing, I try to avoid harm to others with the hope that I leave a lasting impact on those I encounter.  My hope is I leave a light foot print on the path I trod.  Openness to joy, awe, and wonder is my aspiration.  Leadership and cooperation in good balance is my expectation.  In all my endeavor, I strives to be a good citizen accepting and taking responsibility.

My individual strength drives me to be curious, self-accepting, self-reliance and rational levels of self sufficiency, compassionate, and at the same time forming habits that help others, while avoiding habits that are harmful.

Learning Self-Analysis:

My self-analysis of my learning growth through the Baccalaureate degree in nursing program is one I will cherish.  I entered the program not knowing what to expect; but knowing that whatever I encountered I will be able to handle.  At times I find the course work challenging especially because I work full time and sometimes a second job.

My growth through the program has being a steady climb with the culmination a sense of accomplishment.  From the first set courses to the last sets, I have garnered the knowledge that has prepared me to function at the level that is expected of baccalaureate prepared nurse with the intent to exceed.  My encounter with the elderly in the community has shown me that nursing is more than working at the bed side with a renewed insight as to the significant role that the community health nurse plays.  It helped me to understand the need for the nurse at this level and the role they play in advocating for needed services and educating the community on ways to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Their role helps to prevent the use of the emergency room for basic care and limit hospitalizations.

I have grown to appreciate the need for continued education in the profession to stay current with the advancement of technology and trends. It has helped me to fully understand that to get a seat at the table with other health care disciplines that are well prepared; nurses must also be prepared at the highest level.  I also learn that evidence based practice is the new trend in healthcare and the best practice if one wants to guarantee positive patient outcomes.

I am making the changes in my professional practice thanks to this program and the new knowledge that I have gained.  The program has improved on what I learnt in the Associate level.  I strive to be an advocate for the less fortunate and those who make up the ‘vulnerable population’ with the hope I will make a difference and be a role model to those who aspire to join the profession.

What I have learned in the program has served as a solid foundation for my further growth in the profession and form here on out I see the sky as the limit.  I could not have asked for more, my time at City Tech is well rewarding and one I will treasure
