Visual Quotation Project
Type Concept
This concept came about from my love for minimal design, typography and Charles Bukowski. Bukowskiâs work is poetic, cynical and truthful. I was inspired by the Holstee manifesto and Behance manifesto. Iâm not a fan of the fonts that come with traditional software, so Iâve committed myself to using other fonts for my work. The font I used is Nexa by FontFabric. I used the lighter weight for most of the text and used the bolder weight for âgo all the way.â I added more contrast to âgo all the wayâ by making it orange and using all caps. This is my favorite of the three concepts.
Letter Concept
Bukowski is a big inspiration for me. His work is brutally honest yet touching. At times, when reading his poetry I feel as though he his speaking directly to me, to my soul. Thatâs how I came up with the letter concept. Letters are personal and invoke far more emotion than the modern day 4 line email. I used the whole passage that the quote is originally from. The passage and the book itâs from, Factotum, is a work of art in its entirety. I used a font called, Jellyka Saint-Andrew’s Queen, that resembles handwriting. I decided to have the letter sent to Chinaski, the main character in Factotum.
Photograph Concept
I generally donât like using pictures for projects like this because I like creating something completely new. Creatively, itâs more satisfying to work from scratch. I did find a picture I liked, taken by Ulf Anderson. In the photo, Bukowskiâs smoking a cigarette and he appears to be deep in thought. The picture is mostly black or gray, so I decided to use a white font. I used the san serif font Nevis produced by Ten by Twenty.
