Assignment P: Library Program + Modules- Digital
Café: Serving as a link between the Roosevelt Island station (F-Train) and the residence of the island, the café which is located a few blocks away from a Starbucks and Duane Read, will serve as an extension of those businesses and be a hub for business as the islands main circulation from the train stop is along the walkway leading to the café.
Children’s Reading Room: The Children’s Reading room is a large space that provides view of the east river, Queens, and River Crown Lawn (Park). The large space will receive a pleasant early morning light and the large number of book shelves and seating arrangement will encourage children to achieve higher learning.
Lobby: The lobby space is a double height space that serves as an integral part of the library as it serves as the space to link all spaces. The lobby is a hub that will be bustling with life as people will come and travel on the daily. the vast open space will be able to accommodate a vast number of people and allow for a host of activities.
Main Reading Room: Inspired by the Rose Main Reading Room In the New York Public Library, the main reading room is a large space that provides stunning views of both the Black well house and midtown, as well as queens and the East River. The Reading room will have skylights and a mezzanine level to be able to hold thousands of books. The Reading room will have a 40′ high ceiling to create a grand scale.

What appeals to me about this image is the way the furniture is multi-purposed, the bookshelves are also the desk used for reading and research. The overall length of the room matched with the high ceiling makes the space all the more impressive. One of the more unique features to me is the lighting fixtures on the ceiling that appear to also be this decorative element that dances across your eye.
What draws my eye when I see this image is how well the bookshelves seem to direct me into what appears to possibly be a reading space. I find the large Window openings that appear to be at an angle is an interesting way of letting the light into this corridor of sorts. But I think what really fascinates me about this image is that it appears to have this gothic style of architecture with the arched openings and the exposed structure in the ceiling that remind me of older churches.
What Intrigues me the most about this image is how the light interacts with the space through the large window openings. The high ceiling and what appears to be merging spaces also create an illusion of sorts that I personally find fascinating. The overall openness of the center of the lobby space works well for me because The beauty of being able to enter into the lobby space and look up into a triple height ceiling and see bookshelves that seem to go on forever into the light is a very unique effect. And one that at the same time is comforting to.
