Tokyo is long ways from the United States but has an abundance of both traditional and modern culture to explore. They have a sophisticated society with amazing innovations in technology, strong sense of traditional culture, and a wide range of attraction to see.
First thing is first, the language. Although it may seem intimidating being in a country where english isn’t dominant, its ok to ask others for help. Like most countries in the world, english is widely known and chances are, there will be at least one person with a basic understanding of English to help you buy a coffee or find directions.
Manners are quite different from the way Americans interact. In Japan, when being greeted (which is almost overtime you walk into a room), it is formal to respond with a slight bow, but they insist a thank you is not necessary. Another thing to keep in mind is to stay to your left. whether you are walking, on an escalator, or driving a car, its very accustomed to stay to your left because Tokyo is one of the most densely populated cities in the world.
Japanese has one of the most creative cuisines. Most of us have experienced japanese cuisine with sushi but japan is so much more than that. Being that they are a small pacific island, seafood is a dominant protein. Sometimes you’ll be served sashimi (raw fish), octopus, or lots of seaweed garnished snacks. Ramen also originated from Japan and it quickly spread like wildfire throughout the world. They take much pride in artisanal ramen cuisine. As for the vegetarians, theres some need to worry unfortunately. When requesting for food with no meat, meat generally is considered to be beef, therefore bacon or ham will occasionally be included in many “Vegetarian options”
As for nightlife, Tokyo is big on flashy clubs and bars. its not much different from going out for cocktails in the United States however, servers will not accept your tip: if anything they’ll chase you down to give you back your money. Another thing to expect is indoor smoking. smoking is generally not allowed outdoors but its very common do have an alcoholic beverage outdoors or while commuting home on the train. And finally, there is karaoke. A very popular activity in Japan whenever you’re looking to have a fun night out.
Tokyo is VERY expensive, being that its is a island in the Pacific ocean, most products there are imported and are costly. Compared to America, their cost of living may be a burden on us, but that still doesn’t mean that they are the most expensive city in the world. Tokyo is almost on the same cost of living as New York. Compared to Tokyo, everywhere else in Japan should not exceed the general prices of Tokyo.
