To Whom It May Concern,

I am currently a college junior majoring in Human Services at the New York City College of Technology.

My background includes volunteer activities that I have been a part of. I volunteered with New York Cares, which is a non-profit organization that volunteers all around New York City. Most of the volunteering I did was family-based. I visited several family shelters and performed holiday activities with the family and children. I visited nursing homes and spent time with the elders playing Bingo and conversing with them. I helped organize coat drives in my high school to help families keep warm for the winter.

The first language that I learned was Spanish, which makes me bilingual. I am fluent in both English and Spanish. My ability to speak, write, and read in Spanish will help me reach out to the Hispanic community and translate for them.

I would like to work with children and families; I will provide my services to help them successfully live their lives. I would specifically be interested in working with low income families and migrant families. My experiences and skills will help me communicate with many populations; not only populations that speak English, but also populations that speak Spanish.

The majority of the populations where I reside are low income families. Since New York City is very culturally diverse, this will allow me to work with populations of different cultures and ethnicities. I want to serve and help the community; that is why I have volunteered in many community based activities around New York City. Growing up in the South Bronx, I want to break the stereotypes and stigmas behind Hispanic youth coming from low income neighborhoods.

Thank you for your time.

Respectfully,

Tashira Vélez
