HIV primarily attacks a person’s immune system by destroying CD4 cells. As time goes on the body has more difficulty fighting off infections. If a person goes untreated, over time a person’s immune system will be unable to fight off infection. This may lead to certain cancers or what’s called opportunistic infections . AIDS-acquired immune deficiency syndrome is when the person is infected with HIV and has a CD4 count under 200 cell, has been diagnosed with a specific type of cancer such as multiple myeloma or a specific type of infection typical with having HIV.
There are several causes for becoming infected with HIV. A person may become infected with HIV from having unprotected sexual contact. Having vaginal, anal, or oral sex will increase a person’s chances of becoming infected. People who have multiple and anonymous sex partners are also at risk of becoming infected with HIV.
