IAB/MIXX and The Master Series: Tom Geismar

On Sept 29th our class visited the IAB/MIXX Expo Conference and School of Visual Arts Exhibit: The Master Series: Tom Geismar.

I met up with Jen Zhang a little beforehand and went to Crown Plaza Hotel in Times Square together.  There we were greeted by our professor who gave us pointers on what to do within the lounge area.  We grabbed our goodie bags, which were much strudier than we had anticipated, and went inside.

The first booth we encountered was Big Data.  Their most memorable feature was their giveaways, which were underpants.  To all the late coming classmates we encouraged them to take the underpants first.   We spoke to a representative there, where we learned that the company is essentially a online data police.  They aim to protect copyrights and to crack down on any malicious usage of data on the interwebs.

In an Article published in Fortune Big Data predicts the increase of cloud computing traffic will quadruple from 2012 to 2017.  And since these cloud services do not rely on the data storage in the person’s own home, the storage will rely on “2.9 million so-called server farms in the U.S. alone”.  No doubt that would be great incentive to create devices that store more data within smaller containers.

Another booth we were drawn to was the GumGum collaboration with 5th Avenue Digital.  The booth had a photo and printer station with Styrofoam accessories to pose with.  Their giveaways were canned gum and by putting your business card in their fish bowl you’d get more gum.  The photos could be sent to your email.  They were very fun to try out.

GumGum is a fairly new company but, according to the magazine Entrepreneur, it’s algorithm “assigns contextual keywords to images by scanning the text on a page and analyzing incoming search traffic and metadata. The results allow advertisers to target keywords that will match their marketing messages to the right audiences.”

Afterwards we visited SVA for The Master Series: Tom Geismar.  Up for display were logos by Tom Geismar throughout his career.  His works ranged from 1960s to recent ones and all were very distinct and very impressive.  There was also displays of his sketch processes.
