Singapore was once a small island nation however over time the nation has become a highly populated country. As of June 2023, Singapore’s population hit five million nine hundred twenty thousand (National Department of Population and Talent, 2023). Sixty-nine point five percent of its five million nine hundred twenty thousand population were Singapore residents, sixty point nine percent were Singapore citizens, twenty-nine point eight percent were non-residents and nine point twelve percent were permanent residents (Department of Statistics, Singapore, 2023). The nation’s population is still growing slowly and has not returned to pre-pandemic numbers. The population fell by a large amount due to the pandemic’s negative economic effects on migration (O’Neill, 2023). Although the population rate has decreased, Singapore does have a diversified population, owing to extensive previous immigration.
Demographics are determined by using data like literacy rates, birth rates, and ethnicity groups. The literacy rates of both Singaporean women and men are high numbers. Women rank at ninety-five point eight percent and men at ninety-eight point five percent (The World Bank, 2022). The birth rate for women in Singapore is one of the lowest total fertility rates in the world. With an average of one point fifteen percent of children born to each woman (Central Intelligence Agency, 2023). The low birth rate in Singapore will affect how the Government of Singapore will move ahead with dealing as a nation. Lastly, Singapore’s population has a variety of ethnicities. Three-fourths of the population are Chinese, who make up the majority. Indians are the third-largest ethnic group after the Malays (Ho, 2023). Overall, Singapore’s population and demographics are an insight into the country and its people.
