Philosophy Statement

Nursing is a profession that deals with caring for a diverse population with complex conditions. I believe that nursing is a not just a job where you receive a paycheck and go home. Caring is the focal point of the profession. Nurses are the embodiment of hard work, dedication, and patience. Nurses develop a repertoire with patients to help them achieve a level of autonomy.  Nurses must be able to provide care to individuals of different ethnicities, skin tone, sexual orientation, religions, beliefs and values, and language.

I believe that Jean Watson’s theory of Human Caring is in ailment with my personal philosophy of nursing.  According to Watson, caring is central to nursing practice and promotes health better than a simple medical cure.Nursing is a profession in which one never stops learning. It is essential to advance education to engage in lifelong learning. Being a nurse requires many things. Nurses are teachers, mothers, detectives, caregivers, critical thinkers, innovators, and advocates. The characteristics one needs to be an effective nursing is to be kind, respectful, nonjudgmental, empathetic, patient, and understanding. It is important to know the patient being cared for. No two patients are alike. Every patient requires an individualized plan of care. One patient may require a softly toned nurse, who provides encouragement while another patient may need tough love.

Being a  great nurse requires one to have a holistic view of care, being nonjudgmental, and respecting the patient’s wishes. Our own personal beliefs should never be forced onto our patients.  My mission is to provide care with a nonjudgmental view and make an impact on my patients’ lives. As a registered nurse, I will always uphold my personal and professional ethical standards.
