2A. In the past, I may have put importance on aesthetics and functionality, while they play a crucial role; however, from these readings, I have learned a lot more. They have shined a light on the ethical aspect of design. As a designer and a developer, I am always engaged in creative content. This means always looking for inspiration and resources to use for my work. Now I am more aware of ethical behavior highlighted by these readings to give attributions and credits where it’s due. During my early stages, I encountered challenges when it came to correctly attributing the resources I used. This steered me to look for only free-use resources to use, while this made me feel safe, I knew there would come times when I don’t have a free-use option.

These readings have allowed me to gain valuable insights, knowledge, and perspective on design. I want to aim to not only improve my knowledge but also to ensure that I give attributes to the materials I use, fostering behavior that better serves the design community. As I continue my journey as a designer, I am committed to ensuring that my work follows the guidelines of ethical design.

2B. The Shepard Fairey copyright case, involving the famous “Hope” poster created for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign presents an issue that is being taken more seriously nowadays. The case brings into light the “‘transformative’” use of the photograph, a use that is allowed under the law so that creative expression is not stifled.” This brings up the question of what is the right amount of “transformative” that has to be recognized to be agreed upon as transformative work. The situation would have been entirely different if Mr. Fairey obtained permission from the original photographer and given proper credit for his work. Therefore, from where I stand, he should have been more responsible when utilizing other people’s photographs for reference. Mr. Fairey should have asked for permission, given credit, or offered to sign an agreement accordingly so both sides benefit from promoting ethical behavior. This case represents the importance of understanding fair use and the proper form of credibility for future designers to learn about.
