Mercedes-Benz is a german global automobile marque and a division of Daimler AG. The brand is known for luxury vehicles, buses, coaches, and trucks. Mercedes-Benz is currently a member of Daimler.
The founders of the Mercedes-Benz brand are Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, two German-born engineers. And the person who really created the brand name Mercedes was Emil Jellinek, an Austrian businessman. The brand name Mercedes actually came from his daughter Mercédès which was originally a Spanish name for girls, meaning “elegance”, but because things related to France were prevalent in Europe at that time, it was pronounced in French instead.
The company used the name Mercedes and registered it as a trademark in 1902. The three-pointed star was introduced in 1909, emerging from an idea from Gottlieb Daimler’s sons who suggested that their father had used the star to mark their house on a postcard depicting their town.
The Mercedes-Benz logo consists of a three-pointed star which represents the company’s founding father Gottlieb Daimler’s aspiration of universal motorization on the three surfaces of land, sea, and air. In 1909, The three-pointed Star was officially registered. In 1910, it began to appear on the water tank cover of a new Mercedes car.
In 1916, the shape of the trademark was modified to include an outer ring with Mercedes brand name and four small stars, the latter representing several factories owned by the automobile factory at that time. In November 1921, DMG formally applied for the copyright of the trademark design with three-pointed star logo in the ring, and formally became a registered trademark in August 1923.
On June 28th, 1926, when Benz and Cie formally merged with Daimler thus becoming Daimler-Benz AG, it was decided that the brand name Mercedes-Benz would be used on all the automobiles manufactured thereafter. The three-pointed star underwent numerous changes to look like what it is now.
The logo we see today has been in use since the finalization in 1926, with minor modifications.
