Assignments Past and Present

Research Paper Due: May 17

Final Exam: May 24

****Previous Assignments****

Timeline: Five sources written on a separate sheet of paper in the rough (need not be proper MLA format) on Monday, May 8. They will then go in your folders/Journals after the Professor sees them and returns them. Please don’t give the Professor your only copy of this information.

Rough draft presented to Professor on Wed, May 10. It is a ROUGH draft, but a real and very workable draft nonetheless. It will not be formally graded, but it MUST be ready for review and discussion. No Exceptions.

(Note: Be sure to make a hard copy of your personal In-Formation resources list to give to the Prof. if you have not already done so. You will keep it in your In-Formation folder.) Continue to ideate your topic as we discussed in class and provide more resources and write about it at more length…Prof. will try to meet with as many of the students individually as possible. Your folder is for you to keep your ideas together. You can re-submit it on next Journal Check as well.

Over Spring Break: Choose your research paper topic. Write a paragraph saying why you chose this topic and put it in your “In-formation” folder. Be prepared to discuss this on April 19. Begin sketching out a plan for your research papers in your journals, including possible source materials.

April 19. Research paper topic submission and review of presentation In-Formation assessments

April 20th/24th (Note: Thursday April 20 follows a Monday Schedule!). Submit your Thesis Statement (you know what this is from 1101 – it can be very short, but it must be well considered. (It can still be revised later but only with Professor’s approval.)

Next Journal Check Day: May 1 (subject to revision)

Research Papers Due: May 17 (subject to revision)

More Presentations. Take notes on which of your fellow student’s resources you think is worth putting into our communal “Shelf.” You will have to complete a timeline reading from The Atlantic for your journals, and I would like to discuss it very briefly in class on Wednesday. Go to the timeline link, and plug in your birthday. Read the article that is your “forecast/prediction” and note the year. Summarize the contents of the article, and then write a short response — what do you think about your future? Is the prediction accurate to you? What can you possibly do about what will happen — now?

Important dates coming up: Midterm on April 5

Midterm Practice Test Day is April 3

This Wed., Mar. 22, we will be hearing from three students as they Beta test our In-Formation Presentation format. Let’s give them our full attention. If you have not already signed up for a Presentation time, please do so.

The Atlantic — required reading assignment. Please read the following article (link right here) and excerpt (take out and copy) 5 quotes that you like from it. Explain why these quotes appealed to you. The quotes can be any length. This is part of your Class Participation grade and we will discuss in class (March 20) and it will be collected in your next Journal Check.

Please sign up to receive to The Atlantic daily newsletter and video feeds in your email. They are called “The Atlantic Daily” and “Top Video Feeds This Week” and you can find these options at the very bottom of their Home Page (link here). You will have to scroll way down to see them. The sign up area will look like this:

Thanks. Now we can all read the same articles and discuss in class.

Also for Monday, March 20: We will prototype our Presentation formats. So come ready with questions or concerns for how to plan your Presentations. We will listen to three or so examples from students — reading us their adjective-free descriptions, and showing us their Sources. Once we nail down this format, I will assign dates for presenting.

*****

Sorry for my confusing two dates. Upcoming we have: Wed, March 8: writing assignment in class and discussion of our lists; Mon, March 13: Journal Day.

Don’t forget that our Library Day is coming up, March 6. Don’t come to the classroom. We meet outside the library on the 4th floor at 10:00AM for roll call, and Nora, our Librarian, will take us through some activities and orientation.

Continue to compile your list of influences that have shaped you, drawing from Books, Publications, Movies, Music, etc, as we discussed in class. Bring them to discuss in class. If you don’t wish to share your list in public discussion, please let the professor know.

Your next assignment, due March 1 is to type up your Inner/Outer dialogue work. Approximately 500 words (approximate–this will vary, but try to have enough text for me to really get a feel for what you are doing), double-spaced, typed. I will put some examples of formatting on the Home Page, as we discussed in class.

*********************************

Your next assignment, due next Wednesday, Feb. 22, is called “Inner/Outer Dialogues.”

Take any size journal that you are comfortable carrying. Work in transit whenever possible — subways, buses — or in common public places like a coffee shop, etc. Note down what you hear other people around you saying (Outer Dialogues) and what you find yourself saying to yourself/thinking/feeling (Inner Dialogues). There is no length on this assignment at present. It will be helpful for you to make note of the times and settings of where you did your dialogue recording. For instance, “Number 7 Train, 10:00AM, packed rush hour car…” You can record sounds, other impressions, if you like. It’s possible that the train you are on may be silent. : )

Handwritten for now is fine.

Good luck! You are allowed to write anything that people say.

********************

Your next assignment, Due Feb. 15 is:

Continue to write about your family (see previous assignment) without using the word “the.” This time, you have a length and format requirement: 500 words, double-spaced typed. Please be sure your name and course section (ENG 1121 Section 424) appears on the first page. The content of this paper is up to you; use the great comments you gave and received in class as a guide and inspiration!

This paper is worth 10% of your grade. I look forward to reading and learning about you.

Great Job, Reading, Listening, Sharing!!

Here is your next assignment, due Feb. 8:

New Assignment: Once again you will not use the word “the” in your writing. This time, tell me about your family — any aspects you wish, your home life, what sort of world you come from. We might share some of this, just to hear how it’s going, next class. However, it isn’t due until next Wed., Feb 8. You can hand write it, like last time.
