Sept 10, t     Due: Journal 2. Freewrite; Education Essay 1 explained-Rhetorical Success. Discuss readings; HW: read Gardner and Wallis/Steptoe essays.

Sept 12, r     Freewrite. Discuss elements and essay format. Read essays by Esmeralda Santiago, Bilal Rahmani, Colin Powell, and Alfred Lubrano; prepare for Quiz 1

Week 4: Home and New York

Sept 26, r     Discuss the city and how we read the city, HW: read Hughes, Ellison, and Frazier; write Journal 3 on subways experiences and writing strategies

Week 6: Narrating Physical and Moral Homes and NYC

Oct 1, t       Due: Journal 3. Discuss Essay 2: narrating physical and moral views (facts and feelings) of NYC; Discuss readings. HW: read Roiphe, Quindlen, and George in Dwell, and write draft of Essay 2

Week 7: Writing a Comparison Essay
