Why I Chose To Be a Human Services Professional
As a Human Services Professional, I know I will be able to use my knowledge to improve and touch so many people in need of my services. With that let me introduce myself, I am from Nigeria (Africa) a mother of four wonderful boys, and I live in Brooklyn, NY. I came to America
For better chances and when I got here I decided to improve myself by getting where my high school education, when I saw opportunity to do I enrolled in CUNY do so help my dreams come thru.
There are so many reasons why I chose to become a Human Services as my profession, but I want to start by defining Human Services, what Human Service stands for, this will help me in explaining my passion for this field. What Is A Human Service Professional? “Human Service professional is a person who assists individuals and even communities to function as effectively as possible in the main domains of living. These professionals promote improved service delivery systems. They do this by addressing quality of direct services and seeking to improve accountability, accessibility and coordination among the professionals and agencies in service delivery”. My passion for becoming a Human Services Professional can be connected back to my country Africa. I was born in Nigeria, when I came to America; I saw the way the populations with mentally challenge disabilities’ were treated differently from Africa, where they are treated as lesser human with no respect, with no right as the other citizens. This inspired me to get involved, I started working in one of the agencies that provide and care for individuals with disabilities this helped me to get the inside view and also helped me to pursue my degree in Human Services. I know with my degree, I will not only work to earn more money, but I planned on taking my training to Africa one day to help give wellness on how to better treat the population with respect and equality that they so deserved as human like every other citizen in the country.
There are so many reasons other reason I chose to be become an HUS professional. Not only for the financial freedom that come with having a steady job but I also chose this field because it gives me the avenue to exercise my passion for giving and helping others who are need of my time and care. And also a way of serving the population who are less privileged in the community as whole. The joy and fulfillment I receive whenever I render my services to others is just priceless, is so great that am happy am I will now be able to do this professionally in this field. This field also teaches me more about ethics of dealing with other people very day, both people who challenged with disabilities and also people who are not.
Becoming HUS professional will also help to understand and give me the professional knowledge needed to do the job I am currently doing as a direct care counselor. In anything I do, I like to have an insight and better understanding, HUS courses helps me to better understand and treat the population I work with, which mostly consists of elderly individuals’ with challenges. It helps know why some of them do what and act the way they do, giving me the patience needed to accommodates their behaviors and how to also help them at a particular time of need. It also helps me to assist them to transit from a difficult behavior to normality; it gives me more understanding of what and how they are feeling, their frustrations’ with their state that they are in.
Being Christian and a mother has improved my strength, my love, my passion and patience to care about other people who really have difficulties helping themselves. I have always loved having a helping hands whenever is needed even as a child growing up in Nigeria. I used to go to my elderly neighbors to ask if they needed help with anything around their houses and they could always count on me to do their errands for them. When I grew up I started voluntary in my communities and my church after school and weekends, because doing these things makes me feel sense of accomplishment, joy and this make me feel the pride of usefulness in my life. I have always wanted to be a helpful hand whenever I have the opportunity to do so, I always thought and knew that was my calling in life, not just about me, me, or selfish self but about others in my communities around. When I came to America, I saw that there is a better way for me to pursuit my passion in a professional way, not only will I be fulfilling my passion, but I will also be getting paid to do a better job with my experience as a degree holder of Human Services.
I really enjoy working with the elderly people because it interests me to see how humans go through changes in life. The elderly stages of life is so challenging that it becomes so frustrating to adjust to for this population, especially for the people with life challenges. I personally saw my grandmother struggle with aging process, from losing her sight, to be unable to do her every day normal routine like walking without any help. My grandmother changes without disability make me realized and wonder how elders with disabilities must be struggling with their natural age changes of life.
