The multimodal project, “Navigating women’s bodily autonomy, Antigone’s echoes in today’s world,” aims to connect the ancient Greek play, Antigone by Sophocles, and the contemporary discussions of women’s bodily autonomy, with a particular focus on abortion rights in the United States. The genre I have chosen for this project is the informational poster, a medium that provides a dynamic and visually appealing platform for the effective communication of complex ideas.
The purpose of my project is rooted in a desire for information and engagement with a youth audience, particularly high school students. I believe that it is important for there to be accessible information about the ongoing national fight for women’s rights and freedom. My goal was to create a resource that would resonate with students by providing historical context while also making connections to the past year’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The informational poster is a tool to summarize information and provide a visually compelling narrative.
As a result of my experience working with children and teenagers, I understand that the age group and educational context of the audience have influenced the making of this project. High school students tend to respond well to visually stimulating content and an informational poster is an effective way to cater to that preference. The information is designed to be easy to understand. It has a formal tone because I feel the topic requires it, but at the same time, I try to avoid unnecessary jargon.
For the design of the poster, I used the Canvas tool and the help of artificial intelligence to create an image that represents the topic. I used a trendy color palette to attract the attention of my target audience. To illustrate the evolution of the feminist movement and the fight for women’s rights, I used images from different periods in addition to the AI-generated image. I divided the poster into different sections to cover who was Antigone, the overturn of Roe v. Wade, the contemporary protest, and the feminism in Antigone.
In my opinion, the poster successfully achieves its goal of connecting the challenges Antigone faced as a woman in ancient Greece to the challenges women face today. By including both positive and negative reactions from citizens to the SCOTUS decision, the poster promotes an understanding of the ongoing struggles for women’s bodily autonomy. I hope this project will motivate young people to research and speak out on this issue and contribute to a better understanding and empathy for the ongoing struggles of women in our society.
In conclusion, the informational poster is a useful resource to connect the timeless themes of Antigone to the issues surrounding women’s bodily autonomy today. This genre served as a powerful educational tool, resonating with high school audiences, and promoting a more in-depth understanding of the ongoing struggle for women’s rights.
