Political Risk

The Dominican Republic’s political system has always been very chaotic, tracing back to the presidency of Rafael Trujillo and his oppressive regime. This includes major right concerns on racial discrimination, injustice, banning of abortion, and the National Police’s inappropriate use of force (Human Rights Watch, 2019). To add on, after Haiti’s former president, Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated July 7, 2021, the Dominican Republic’s current president, Luis Abinader, has been on a task to encourage the United States and other members of the international population to do more to solve Haiti’s ongoing complicated catastrophe (Charles, 2022). This interrelationship shows how it affects the whole island in general. This then led to the Dominican Republic closing its embassy in Haiti due to the country’s political and socio economic crisis, which is currently causing controversy in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic (Dominican Today, 2022).
