Introduction

Welcome to the Introduction section of my dental hygiene portfolio!

I am Railyn Calderon Morales, a twenty-two-year-old Latina from the Dominican Republic. Like many immigrants, my parents encouraged me to pursue the ‘American dream’—a chance to thrive and excel. Growing up, I was deeply influenced by the medical field through the experiences of friends and family. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic intensified my interest in healthcare, realizing the crucial role not just nurses but also doctors, dentists, and assistants play worldwide.

This heightened awareness led me to explore various healthcare fields. Known for my attention to detail and passion for educating others, I found my calling in dental hygiene. The growing need for dental care and its importance for overall health struck a chord with me. Dentists have a lot on their plates, so preventive care has become even more critical, highlighting the role of dental hygienists. Seeing my cousin, who’s a hygienist, inspired me with her dedication and the positive impact she makes.

Every part of a dental appointment fascinated me, from the careful procedures to the caring follow-up. This interest led me to study Dental Hygiene at City Tech College. I’m working towards my associate’s degree and aim to get my Dental Hygiene license this summer, the starting point for my goal of becoming a Registered Hygienist.

Looking ahead, my career aspirations extend beyond hygiene. I envision myself as an Orthodontist, driven by a commitment to open my own dental practice. My ultimate goal is to make quality dental care accessible and affordable to communities across the United States, ensuring brighter smiles and healthier lives for all.
