The textile industry’s fiber and fabric production are one of the main factors propelling Puerto Rico’s economy. However, Puerto Rico’s textile industry has seen a significant decrease in operations following the departure of large manufacturers (Hanesbrands to close Ponce, Puerto Rico, plant,2024) such as Hanes. Puerto Rico’s textile industry has had a history of growth and decline (Myths and Realities of Manufacturing in Puerto Rico,2021) over the most recent years. Even with the ups and downs of the textile industry, the island has experienced a shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly apparel, which is helping to reemerge textile manufacturers. Puerto Rico is re-exploring fiber and fabric production (Puerto Rico Fibershed,2018) through initiatives like the Puerto Rico Fibershed, which aims to create a regional textile system.
