The story and film both had many differences that occurred. Some bigger than others for instance in the written story there were some characters that played certain roles and that were introduced that were completely different compared to the film. One major difference was the part played by Jefferies caretaker who played a big role in the written story and film. In the written story Jeffries caretaker was a man by the name of sam. Sam was very close to Jefferies and did whatever he was told by Jeffries no matter what. In the film, Hitchcock did something different that gave the film a different vibe by adding a caretaker by the name of Stella and Jeffries’s partner named Lisa. This one major difference showed how the film by Hitchcock made certain changes giving this film a different vibe by using sams role and splitting it into two people. Another major difference was definitely the main character Jeffries himself. For instance, In the film, shows who Jefferies is and what he actually does for a living. It starts off with him in a wheelchair showing his injury and what he spent doing such as what he would see and other gadgets used such as his camera that showed he was actually a photographer. In the written story there wasn’t much known and said about Jeffries. There was very little information about his personal life unlike compared to the film. Some minor differences in the written story were when Jeffries started giving information to his long time friend named Boyne. In the film, the name was changed to Doyle but both played similar roles such as working on homicide cases. Another minor difference was when in the film there was a dog that was unfortunately killed because the dog started to dig somewhere that might have led traces back to Mr. Thorwald. In the written story there was never any dog. These were som minor and major differences shown in the written story and film.

I think like most, the difference that stuck out to me the most was that Sam’s character from the text has been somewhat split into Stella the caretaker and Lisa Fremont, his girlfriend, and like Sam, willing to be daring for Jeffries. This is something definitely needed in both the text and the film in order for Jeffries to really get involved, someone to go out and gather information for him because he can’t. What is really different here is the motivations of these two. In the text, Sam is driven by some sort of ten year history with Jeffries and perhaps a paid servitude. Jeffries seems to pity Sam and at the same time not care for him much. I still wonder what ever happened to those eggs Jeffries asked him to smack together. In the film, Lisa, as his girlfriend, became convinced that a murder was afoot and at certain points even seemed excited about the prospect of helping to solve the case. She went into Thorwald’s apartment on her own, unlike Sam, and even to Jeffries’ dismay.
The breaking and entering brings me to another large difference between the text and the film. In the text, not only did Jeffries ask Sam to do it, it actually goes over smoothly, in the Sam was not caught breaking the law and made it out undetected. This is also different from the film because the intention in the text was to make him think someone was there looking for something in order to figure out where something might be hidden.
In the film, Jeffries is okay with Stella and Lisa checking the flower garden but when they don’t find anything Lisa sneaks into Thorwald’s apartment against Jeffries’ wishes. Unlike Sam, she is specifically looking for the wedding ring. Not only does Thorwald catch her in his apartment, the cops come at Jeffries’ call and arrest her.
Some minor differences are, the inclusion of the dog being killed to hide what it knew. This might be more of a major difference actually. Another difference is Jeffries’ detective friend’s name. In the text it’s Boyne and in the film it’s Thomas Doyle.
One major difference between the written story and the film is the characters surrounding Jefferies. In the writing, he has a caretaker named Sam who would be his mobile accomplice. Within the film, he has two women in his life. One was a nurse named Stella and the other was his girlfriend Lisa. The film gives both women a generous amount of screen time in the beginning and also gives the viewer a better understanding of the protagonistâs personality in comparison to the reader. However, even with more visual cues provided, the writing allowed the reader to explore Jefferiesâ critical thinking. Furthermore, it is known right away in the film as to why he is always looking out into the courtyard all day. He is seen with a cast on one leg and sitting in a wheelchair. It is also known of his occupation, which is photography. Within the writing, it was not known of what job he held and why he was wheelchair ridden. It was only briefly mentioned at the end when a doctor comes in and says that Jefferies could âtake that cast off [your] leg now.â
Minor differences within the written story and the film is that it seemed as if the neighbors each had their own story in the film. Each had their own close ups and follow ups and the attention that Jefferies gave them by the panning of the camera is apparent. The viewerâs point of view when Jefferies was looking out the window was wherever the camera shot. This gave the neighbors a larger role to the overall film whereas in the story, they were briefly mentioned and did not seem as important. In most of the short story, he had only regularly observed Thorwald. Another minor difference is that Jefferies seems to be more sociable in the film as he looks to both Stella and Lisa for their opinions and tells them details of his observations. Although Sam was involved in helping Jefferies, Sam was not looked towards for advice as much. There is one final difference to as what struck me as a similar quote was when Sam stated, âAnytime you hear one of them things, thatâs a sign of death someplace close around.â To which Stella constantly claims she âsmells trouble.â They both were the caretakers who foreshadowed the outcome of events through different wording.
The first significant contrast between the story from the film is that Sam is a youngster who was Jeffries’ associate however in the film, it is an old woman who just comes to take his temperature and clean around the house. The second significant contrast is Jeffries’ adoration intrigue shows up and is important for a few significant scenes in the film yet in the story, Lisa was never referenced nor alluded to anytime. Toward the start of the film, Lisa has plans to do a sentimental date for Jeffries since he can’t activate a lot. Jeffries’ collaboration with Lisa isn’t like their dating, since he doesn’t show a lot of warmth towards her. He just keeps her around on the grounds that she causes him and in light of the fact that every other person is disclosing to him she is a decent catch. The connection between the two will get more grounded and they will be nearer.
One minor contrast between the composed story from the film is that Jeffries is a Photographer. In the composed story, his depiction of things gave the peruser clues and suppositions that he possibly something from an analyst to perhaps a private specialist. The subsequent distinction is the neighbor’s portrayals. In the film, according to Jeffries’ depiction, there is The Torso young lady who is a youthful ballet performer artist. Ms. Forlorn Hearts is a woman who lives without anyone else and was desolate to such an extent that passing was her companion. The Newlyweds are in the wedding trip stage and one that nobody will actually overlook. Ms. Amplifier is a craftsman of extremely odd and peculiar workmanship. In the composed story, Jeffries makes reference to a couple with two high schooler kids and A woman with a kid and that was all he referenced about his neighbors before the significant occasion.
I noticed a few differences between the story and the film some were major and some were minor. One major difference I noticed was that Sam the caretaker wasn’t there, well not the way he was portrayed in the story. In the film âSamâ was a woman and older woman. I thought this was a major difference because in the story Sam assists jefferies in catching Thorwald for killing his wife, so i’m deducing that, that scene will either be cut from the movie or someone else would do it because I don’t think that the female caretaker will be as compliant as Sam. Another major difference is that Jefferies has a significant other, I say it’s a major difference because in the story they make him out to be an old, lonely man that has no one and all he does is stalk⌠I mean watch his neighbors but no in the film he has a girl, who keeps him entertained and I just thought it was major because in the story the vibe of Jefferies wasn’t the same as the movie I felt like it was 2 completely different people. Although I’m sure there are other major differences between the story and film, those are just the ones I noticed and thought were important to me. Moving on to the minor differences, one minor difference would be that Jefferies in the film worked as a photographer which would explain why he likes to watch people and why he is so observant and all the things the story mentioned. It’s different from the story because in the story they never mention his job. I say it’s minor because the story never mentioned his job so there isn’t much of a difference because you don’t know his job from the story. Another minor difference would be that in the story I thought that Jefferies was an old unattractive man, like senior citizen, like retiree all that but when I watched the film jefferies is not a senior citizen, he seems late 40s to early 50s and he’s attractive and seems to still be kicking it and doing his thing. I was just surprised at how he looked.Â
Two of the major differences between the movie and the story would have to be the characters and character traits. In the story Jeffriesâ housekeeper is a male who is named Sam and in the movie, the person taking care of Jeffries is an older female named Stella. In the movie Jeffries personal life comes more into light more than in the story. In the story, his personal life is barely or not even mentioned and in the movie we find out that Jeffries is a photographer and Lisa is introduced in the movie as well. Both Lisa and Jeffries seem to be in a relationship of some sort. Lisa is not mentioned in the story, so the introduction of Lisa and their relationship and character swap of Stella and Sam are some of those major differences that you can see right away. As for the minor differences, the settings where slightly different, in the story the people lived in houses and in the movie they lived in apartment buildings. When I read the short story, I pictured a suburban area and in the movie, it is more of an urban area like New York City. Another minor difference was in the story when Jeffries saw a single mother putting her child to sleep and leaving for work, the movie does not show this part in the movie, I am assuming they replaced them with just a single lady that was dancing in her apartment.
Although the movie was based on Cornell Woolrichâs short story, there are definitely some differences between them. For instance, in the short story Jeffries had an assistant named Sam (who had known him for ten years) but in the movie the same role was performed by a female nurse named Stella. Whereas Jeffries seemed to be more authoritarian with Sam that was not the case with Stella. As well, in the short story there is no mention of a girlfriend. However, in the film Jefferies had a very classy and lovely girlfriend. Thus, the movie added an element of âwoman intuitionâ that didnât exist in the story. The other major difference we see is the representation of Jeffriesâs profession. Short story only vaguely mentions what he does for a living, while the movie tells us explicitly that he is a photographer. This information gives us an insight about his personality and lets us understand why he is good at observing his surroundings and picking up what most wouldnât, it is literally his job. In the story, on the other hand, his description left us guessing on whether he was a detective, or maybe a private investigator. A minor difference between the story and the movie is the details (or lack thereof) of Jeffries love life. In the reading there was no hints or talks about his love life, while in the film there is Lisa, his girlfriend, which appears in a number of scenes and even plans a romantic date with Jeffries. Another minor difference is in the description of the neighbors. In the story we cannot clearly identify the neighbors Jeffries is observing, while in the movie they are shown to us clearly.
there were a lot of differences between the book and the movie based on the same thing. I would to like to say the film was way better than the reading gave me ideas of who’s Sam and Jeffries. in the book Sam was told to be a man who is close friends with Jeffries but in the movie Sam is an old lady who is taking care of Jeffries such as a caretaker. another character that was not mentioned in the book Lisa but was in the film. Jeffries was told to be a detective because of the description in the written story but in the film we found out he is an photographer.
Things that I could say that was the movie did differently from the reading is that in general, It gave me a clearer picture of what jeff and reading up to where we are in the text jeff did not have a girlfriend but I did notice that he did in the movie I could not remember what her name was but she was not mentioned in the reading, and this is a major change because it changes how I had pictured the beginning of the reading. One of the minor change that I notice was reading the first few paragraphs I got the idea that jeff was leaving in a very small apartment which he couldnât move around for different reasons on which was because he was not rich or middle class but in the movie he looks like a middle-class man. In The movie, the way he was looking at the neighbors seems like it is set up for jeff to see whatever they are doing this was different in the reading the way it was described doesnât feel the same and I feel like this was a very big difference from the reading.
In the film and reading there are a few different events that took place that didn’t in another. Before I get into the differences I would like to say I’m liking the film so far rather than the book, but that’s another time. The first major difference between the written story and the film is in the book Sam is a man who is Jeffries’s accomplice Sam is someone who would do anything for Jeffries, but in the film “Sam” is an old lady who comes to take care of Jeffries she would come in the mornings change his clothes, make his bed just like a caretaker would do. . Another major difference I would say is in the book we were never given the profession of Jeffries, but in the few minutes of the film it was given that he is a photographer. In the reading I had some speculations about what he did because the way he talks made it seem like he was an investigator or detective just by the way he was so observant. I would say that this very important information for us to know in the text because it would’ve given us an understanding of his behavior especially how he was acting in the beginning of the text. An important information is in the reading there was no hints or talks about his love life, and of course in the film there is a moment about him and his lover you would say that is a detail you wouldn’t want to leave out. A minor difference we see is the film doesn’t really focus on Mr. and Mrs. Thorwald, whereas in the reading it focuses on the couple. Another minor difference is in the film Jeffries first focus is on a young ballerina, Ms. Lonely Hearts who lives by herself, and the Newlyweds who are still in the honeymoon phase, and as you would guess the story Jeffries only spoke or mention a lady with two kids.
