Manipulation is is defined as the “aim to change the behavior or perception of others through indirect deceptive or underhand tactics” Othello by William Shakespeare 1604 is a play about a man named Othello and I will use (Othello)1995 a more modern version that was made into a movie.

Othello the original play by Shakespeare is a well-structured play about a moor in the city of Venice in 1604 named Othello, he was different compared to the other people in the story he was he was a warrior a leader, and a strong leader. His strength and intelligence could not protect him from the manipulative games of Iago who was Othello the antagonist in this play because Iago managed to manipulate everyone leading to the death of many of them while he survives which I would say he didn’t deserve but this is from my point of view because some people might think that him living in prison with all those death he caused would be a better punishment for his actions.

In the original Othello 1604 virtue is one of the common ethics, in the Iago he was true to his virtue ethics until the end, throughout the story he was manipulating everyone sometimes for money and sometimes we wouldn’t know why and one thing about him is that he would always get the last words he would always win because he sets up everything to end up on his favor, he would even kill people in order to keep his plans going that something you have your pride into in order to not care about the well-being of other peoples but that was him though.

In the story Othello had a lot of women and they played different roles and they were as important as the men in the story but I feel like the women’s could’ve been treated better especially Othello wife Desdemona because even when she tried to apologize for something she didn’t do Othello did not believe her, she loved Othello even though all that he was telling her which made her feel bad. It also showed that how much impact love can have on someone because Othello loved Desdemona and he loved her some much that he was blind to the manipulation of someone who wanted to destroy his love life “She loved me for the dangers I had passed, And I loved her that she did pity them” based on this you can tell that she appreciated Othello very much and she wouldn’t try to hurt him in any way. even though Roderigo was paying Iago at the moment you could tell that he wasn’t working for Roderigo he was working to accomplish his goal which was unknown. And this is where the virtue ethics came in Iago surely did have his motives but it was unknown he was true to it until the very end. “No, Iago, I’ll see before I doubt” Othello did not want to believe what he heard but he wanted to see before he make a decision but someone like Iago has tactics that made him who he is.

Utilitarianism is an ethic found in this story, the feeling of being responsible for the things that happened and Iago didn’t give the slightest idea that he was doing something wrong he didn’t faze of what he was doing as if he was doing something right, to me what he did what he was doing was wrong but if he doesn’t know any better you can’t really hold him accountable because he thought he was doing something that was right. “Strangle her in bed, even the bed she hath contaminated,” says Iago made me question how much he was already in control of the situation he was in because Othello killed Desdemona her this way it made me think that he had some kind of power over people because he manage to deceive Othello and ended up speaking her death into existence.

This play is similar to Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet because of the confusing and tragic ending that happened the death that those characters suffer most of them did not deserve it especially Desdemona because was innocent and the guilt of Othello for killing her made him kill himself because he loved her that much similar to Romeo and Juliet.

Roderigo trying to get with Desdemona by depending on another person is something that was an important part of the play he had money paying Iago a lot of money for something he wanted when she is clearly married to another person. It might be something that determines his virtue ethics because he would do anything to make them break up so he can be with her therefore he was living within his ethics that what he knew and he was doing it because he thought he was doing right.

Overall the play Othello and the movie 1995 display a lot of similarities because the translation tried to picture the play as close as possible and it’s a story of trust and love and manipulation where a lot of important character die due to manipulation by a man maned Iago it’s something that was tragic because most of them did not deserve the death that they suffer.

Like water for chocolate: Midterm final draft

Like water for chocolate is a novel by Laura Esquivel set in Mexico where two young lovers Tita and Pedro were ceased from getting married by Mama Elena, who is the mother of tita because of a family tradition, The novel became successful and was later adapted into a movie by Alphonso.

When books are adapted into movies there are three possible choices of translations, traditional, radical, and literal and they all have their own way of showcasing a story, in this particular case some changes were made of the changes one of them was Rosaura death, Rosaura was one of the most important characters in the story she was mama Elena’s favorite daughter and she was a mother and the wife of Pedro before she died, her death in the novel was honored with a funeral even though “many people did not attend because of the unusual odor”, in the movie her death was ignored and for a character that was important, it feels too vague.

love is an intense feeling of affection, in this novel love played an important part in many of those characters life I can say that it basically shapes the story of those characters. in the case of john and Tita they fell in love and they knew what they desired which was to get married but they were not able to get married because of mama Elena family tradition, Pedro took an alternative way in order to get close to the love of his life tita, which was to get married to Tita sister Rosaura, but told tita that “he only did it just to get closer to her” it’s strange to marry the sister of the love your life because someone would end up getting hurt either way but because of how much Pedro loved tita he did not seem to care very much.

Love was complicated when it comes to mama Elena, she loves loved Rosaura more than tita, because of that Rosaura could get away with things that tita couldn’t such as being a picky eater, but tita couldn’t get away not eating her least favorite food. I say she was complicated at loving because she didn’t get to live with the love of her life since he was killed trying to get away with Elena, later on, her parents forced her to marry Juan de la Garza. But she, later on, forced her favorite daughter Rosaura to marry someone who did not love her because of the family tradition, it seems complicated for her to love also because you would think that she would’ve shown more affection toward Gertrudis because she was the daughter of the love of her life it didn’t seem that way at all towards her, she was giving off the aura of angry women throughout the whole story, even after she died she couldn’t be happy for tita she was trying to get her away from the family.

Gertrudis which is tita sister had a baby which was a mulatto because of his “grandfather who was mama Elena first boyfriend which was killed” it was approached differently in the movie they did not show the kid, it was important because Gertrudis real father was the reason why mama Elena husband Juan de la Garza passed away and was about to cost Gertrudis her husband until tita stepped in and show the letter mama Elena was hiding for her entire life which proved that Gertrudis wasn’t cheating.

another important difference was mama Elena death is also an important death which was drastically changed in the movie, in the novel she died of “horrible pain, spasms and violent convulsions which were caused by a syrup of ipecac which she was secretly taking” it was not good for her health, but in the movie she died because she was pushed off a cliff when the group of bandit that came to the ranch, it was a different case in the reading because this specific scene was put together with another part that happened in the movie, my thoughts on this was to save time because the movie was already fast-paced.

When it comes to the translation type it couldn’t be radical because the story was not reshaped extremely, at first I thought it was strictly a literal translation because the majority of the story stayed the same with some minor changes, when I take my times an analyze the part that was changed it seems more of a tradition because when you looked at the scene that was changed, such as mama Elena’s death, Rosaura death, Gertrudis baby, they were changed in order to fit the narrator goal, I said the story feel fast-paced maybe he did not have the budget to recreate those scenes, that why I feel that the movie is a traditional translation.

The story itself is interesting it has many factors that keep you engaged in the story I was getting Romeo and Juliet aura because of the family drama and the love complications they had a lot in common.

I think this is something that will always with movie interpretations of books to a movie there will always be some changes, that why there are 3 different types of translations which are traditional, radical, and literal translation and the movie I feel like it’s a traditional translation because it’s very similar to the novel which it was inspired by with changes I wouldn’t particularly say they are changes because they still happened in the movie just different from the book. I learned that that film would try to tell the stories in their own way even when it is not a documentary either the movie compliments the text, or it made it more confusing

The novel became successful and was later adapted into a movie by Alphonso Arau where the majority of the story stayed the same with a few differences.

As I said in the introduction the movie by Alphonso and The reading by Laura mostly are very similar the difference is the movie is fast-paced and changed some of the things, such as Rosaria death, Rosaria was one of the most important characters in the story she was mama Elena’s favorite daughter and she was a mother and the wife of Pedro before she died and her death in the novel was honored with a funeral even though many people did not attend because of the unusual odor, in the movie her death was ignored and for a character that was important it feels too vague. Gertrudis which is tita sister had a baby which was a mulatto because of his grandfather who was mama Elena first boyfriend which was killed had a different approach in the movie the did not show the kid because it was important because Gertrudis real father was the reason why mama Elena husband Juan passed away and was about to cost Gertrudis her husband until tita stepped in and show the letter which proved that Gertrudis wasn’t cheating.

desire is one of the common there we encounter in this novel because everyone in this was striving for something, for Pedro, it was the love he decided to get married to Rosaura in order to get close to tita which e felt like it was the only way, tita was love and ending the family tradition, but mama Elena was striving to keep the family tradition going, and the family tradition ended but it comes with the cost of many lives from mama Elena to tita .

The story itself is interesting it has many factors that keep you engaged in the story, from the beginning a supernatural factor was introduced which was the birth of tita the daughter of Mama Elena and Juan de la Garza she was born in the kitchen and cried and which make pounds of salt causes salt, to the family tradition that the last daughter shouldn’t married and take care of their mother until she dies which itself is very interesting because you could get married and still take care of your mother and then the family drama/ love which is when mama Elena decided that Rosaura was going to marry Pedro instead of tita, it was interesting because it’s a stupid decision to propose one daughter instead of the one that was truly in love, the cooking, and the recipes was the from the beginning. Later on, the ghost of Mama Elena telling tita she needed to go away from the family because she was ruining everything.

Things that I could say that was the movie did differently from the reading is that in general, It gave me a clearer picture of what jeff and reading up to where we are in the text jeff did not have a girlfriend but I did notice that he did in the movie I could not remember what her name was but she was not mentioned in the reading, and this is a major change because it changes how I had pictured the beginning of the reading. One of the minor change that I notice was reading the first few paragraphs I got the idea that jeff was leaving in a very small apartment which he couldn’t move around for different reasons on which was because he was not rich or middle class but in the movie he looks like a middle-class man. In The movie, the way he was looking at the neighbors seems like it is set up for jeff to see whatever they are doing this was different in the reading the way it was described doesn’t feel the same and I feel like this was a very big difference from the reading.

One area I know in great details is the area I grew up in Haiti to be specific I used to live my father house with brother in the countryside west Haiti, in a land that my grandfather left for my fathers and his siblings, the land has 4 houses and many different types of plants and gardens because my grandfather was a farmer, some of those plants include peas and cherry in the front portion, papaya trees in the back portion of the land, breadfruit, soursop, different types of mangos trees, quenepa and many more all over the place. my aunt’s house which is in the front portion of the land facing the main road right next to it is my father’s house facing the road that crosses the main road and there other two houses are my uncles which are in the back portion of the land. in a 5 room house a big living room 3 bedrooms in a kitchen where I lived. lived across the street the street-facing my aunt’s house there is a tire shop and right next to it there is a football field where a lot of kid around my age and some older would go there to play, I and m brother would go there every day to play because that was the most fun thing in the area. Next to my house, there is a little shop where you can buy food, drinks, and much other stuff it’s like a market but it doesn’t sell meat and other things on the floor on top of the food shop there is a place where people would pay to watch football games because football is a big thing to us Haitians. At night you can hear dog crickets noise since I live in the countryside, in weekdays morning I wake up to the smell of street food because there a street vendor that sells patties next to the food shop, on Saturdays it’s the sound of football practice that wake me up, the noise of the players playing, the coaches whistle.

Week 2 Film-Lit Coffeehouse Assignment #1

This summer my goal was to visit my uncle and cousins who lived in France but the virus happened and everything changed. other than that I worked the whole Covid19 period which was stressing other than working I didn’t really do anything important this summer, but I would not say it was one of the worst ever for me even though it might be for many people around the world. But I missed going to school because even though it was annoying waking up early sometimes to go to school sometimes I realized how much I appreciated going to school instead of the online class.

Between Tell tale heart and The yellow wallpaper I preferred to tell-tale heart, tell-tale heart was more interesting even though I read the yellow wallpaper in a previous English class. I liked the tell-tale heart more because of the idea that a murder which led the character who committed a crime who confesses to it out of fear and paranoia of the police was very interesting to me and the video clips watched help me understand it even more. One of the video clip though was intensely funny probably unintended but it reminded me if the second ‘IT’ movie which I felt that was more comedic than scary.

One of the reasons why I liked tell-tale heart more was that the yellow wallpaper felt like something that happened in real life and I feel like johns wife was imprisoned in a way, she was said to be suffering from a mental breakdown after giving birth and basically was staying in the same place all day and night and the baby was never really mentioned more than once in the story as if she never got to hold the baby or see it was weird.
