After reading ā€œLife of Piā€ by Yann Martel published in 2001 and the movie that came out in 2012 which was based around the book. Which empathy is included in both the book and being shown in the film. Empathy means the ability to understand and share feelings of another. like a person having oneself in another person’s shoes.Ā

The ā€œLife of Piā€ is a book and a movie based on a boy from India traveling over sea and one day a storm happened. Which left him stranded in the middle of nowhere pi. With surviving meeting animals such as Ricard park the tiger. A scene when a hyena was eating the injured zebra with Pi crying and yelling at the hyena which could describe the empathy as us the reader and the audience seeing how pi might be feeling the pain the zebra is going through. Another scene where Pi feels bad for the animal is with orangutan feeling nauseous with Pi wanted to give it a medication. That scene shoes compassion since it shows that Pi feels terrible for the creatures.

Pi’s mother played a huge role in the movie how he mentions her with the cook killing his mother. In the movie when Pi talks about how ā€œmy mother fought against an adult manā€. Emphasizing that the hyena represents the cook and the orange juiceĀ  represents the mother wounded and was surprised by the attack. This represents redemption forgivenesses by orange juice saving Pi from the hyena.Ā

Ā In the film the honor word is in a scene that involves Richard Park in the ending scene. How he walked away when they arrived at the island felt betrayed which the whole movie being on the boat together so he honored him.

Ā  Ā  Ā ”The Rear Window”

The rear window is a film based on a story written by Cornell Woolrich that came out in 1942Ā  a well respected author known for writing books based on mystery. Books that become best selling movies are always created based on the book. Having the exact details and situations without changing anything which would attract readers to see a film based on a book. In film or book translation is always used ( Literal, Radical, Traditional) one of the translations was used in the 1954 film ā€˜ā€™ rear windowā€™ā€™ directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Traditional because it kept every detail from the book without changing the scene or situations.Ā  Such was the character Jeff after being in an accident which left him on a wheelchair in the book with film Jeff was still injured.Ā

The film kept the similarities from the book like the setting and the main characters which explains the traditional translation. The book is based on a guy named Jeff spying on his neighbor being suspicious of the neighbor wife’s disappearance. Which the film kept with Jeff spying and knowing something is wrong with the neighbor.Ā Ā

The differences would be the development of the character Jeff’s ā€˜ā€™main characterā€™ā€™ personal life wasnā€™t mentioned in the story. But in the film the director wanted the audience to know how important he is in the film. Even the Lisa character is supposed to be the main character Jeff’s girlfriend in the short story she has not been mentioned or been involved at all in the book but in the movie she plays a major role for the investigation of the neighbor. Even Sam in the story was replaced with a character named Stella in the film version having the same responsibilities as Sam which was to take care of Jeff.Ā

Ā In the film the actors portrayed the characters from the book nicely being able to bring something to life for the audience and readers. To catch the viewers attention and to help the viewer understand the film Hitchcock use different types of symbols and emotion with character even increase intentions with music for serious scenes. Such as the ending Jeff calls to confront the killer without talking and total silence while the music creates an interesting tension that’s diegetic. An example of non- diegetic sound is seen in the film when Lisa gets caught in camera This is seen when Lisa shows that she found the ring and held it for Jeff to zoom in and see it.

In conclusion the thing i have learned is that written stories can be created as a film with translation involved Radical, Traditional and Literal but depending on how the film is going with the written story. So the story and the film try to teach us to trust your intuition and donā€™t trust people. They might seem like they are nice and all that but they might not be.

there were a lot of differences between the book and the movie based on the same thing.Ā  I would to like to say the film was way better than the reading gave me ideas of who’s Sam and Jeffries. in the book Sam was told to be a man who is close friends with Jeffries but in the movie Sam is an old lady who is taking care of Jeffries such as a caretaker. another character that was not mentioned in the book Lisa but was in the film.Ā  Jeffries was told to be a detective because of the description in the written story but in the film we found out he is an photographer.

This summer was really different due to covid 19 it changed my plans throughout this summer. I stayed home reading books and going out less because of the virus. But the cases were dropping so when i heard about that i started going out more and playing soccer. Also i had my chance to design and fixing my room.

After reading both the ā€œThe Tell-Tale Heartā€ and ā€œThe Yellow Wallpaper”. while both stories main character are both dealing with mental illness, they both have different lifestyle ,setting and writing style. but i preferred ”tell tale heart” i love reading horror book so basically reading it and watching the video i was intrigued wanting to know what drove him to madness. the other story about a female character dealing with an illness and surrounded by wall papers.
