Dear Students,
I would like to welcome you to LIB1201 OL50! My hope is that by the end of the course you have a new appreciation of the subject and that you may continue to use research as an invaluable tool in your academic career and for making decisions in everyday life.
My name is Prof. Nandi Prince. I will be your instructor for the next fifteen weeks and the entire course will be conducted in a distance learning format. The course runs from Aug 26 to December 16. The course will be conducted in Zoom, and we will also use Blackboard and OpenLab. Our classes will meet synchronously (live instructor-led sessions) and asynchronously (lectures posted on Blackboard that you may choose what day and time you will review). You will also use OpenLab for some asynchronous discussions and assignments. I must emphasize that asynchronous lectures may be accessed anytime but you must complete the assignments associated with them by the deadline because they count towards your participation grade. You will find important information about the course in the syllabus. Spoiler alert, it is located on the tab titled Syllabus to the far right of the top dashboard. Consider the syllabus a passport for success, it is a contract of sorts filled with valuable information. Some of the important information contained in the syllabus are:
class meeting times and format
assignments and deadlines
library resources such as live chatting with a librarian
college support for counseling, disability information, technical issues, tutoring, etc.
Your college is open online!
Let me tell you about me. I have a Masters in Library and Information Science and a Master of Arts in English. I am a former CUNY student. I received my Bachelors in Hospitality Administration from New York Institute of Technology. I enjoy researching and teaching students about it. Some of my hobbies are swimming, tennis and travelling. Two little known facts in some of my circles are: I am an accomplished cake artist and I am presently in training for a bowling tournament.
For students new to online learning, it is a lot like face-to-face courses. It is a significant time commitment and I recommend you spend at least six hours additional time on the course material. This is a writing intensive course and no textbooks are required. On the days that we do not meet the material will be made available at least a week before time. I will respond to email from Monday to Friday with the exception of Thursday between the hours of 9:00 am and 7:00 p.m. You can also arrange with me a time to discuss the course assignments by telephone.
Please contact me if you have questions about the course. I look forward to the next fifteen weeks!
