From the previous page that mentioned generation barriers through generation conflicts and to add on to that an article that focused on the author’s personal experiences growing up with a mix of two cultures as well as speaking about Asian ideals and comparing the stories of others. In this article the author mentioned that one of the most important ideals to Asian families is reputation. It’s reputation that the author described as “prioritizing appearances and prestige, seeing children as commodities to make you proud” (Fan). It’s later explained that the author’s parents were persistent on him becoming a doctor and his friend asked why? He explained that it isn’t about the salary but it’s about the bragging right s and reputation associated with having a child that’s a doctor. I’ve had a similar experience that I can relate with the author being that growing up in an Asian household my parents would be telling me to become and engineer or a doctor. From hearing the author’s story I can agree that it’s not necessarily the career path that I pick that impresses them but the amount of power they have from just saying it to other and feeling very proud of that.
There are certainly other reasons to generation barriers such as linguistic barriers. An article published on nbcnews.com it indicated that different immigration status may impact families from reaching out for help because of their status they might not be able to receive such help and whether there are accommodations for their inability to speak or read English. The inability to communicate in the same language isn’t just an issue with the Asian community but it’s also an issue to other communities as well.
The image above illustrates an actual barrier that blocks communication and can also symbolizes the inability to communicate because they aren’t communicating in the same language.
