I will be volunteering my time and resources back home to Jamaica, in rural and under served community. While volunteering as a runner for the board exam last Spring I met a Jamaican dentist that went to school in Cuba. She has a private practice, but works with the Ministry of Health in Jamaica. Our discussion entailed the needs of the country, and that my high school dental clinic was not open despite being offered manpower. I suspect the problem has to do with supplies.
To date I have been a dental Assistant since September 2012, and have been working continuously since then to present. I have worked both in a hospital and private setting. Work Experience/Clinical Internship: Interned at King’s County Hospital as Dental Hygienist, On the weekend as an Office Manager and Front Desk Receptionist. Duties include but not limited to: scheduling appointments, registering and preparing patient records; verifying insurance eligibility and benefits; performing insurance billing; and managing inventory and equipment maintenance. DH: Training consists of Patient Treatment and Management, Scaling and Root Planing [SRP] Four-Handed Dental Assisting: Chairside to General and Pediatric Dentistry; Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Implant; digital and manual radiographs; panoramic imaging, utilizing Patterson, Dentamax & Dentrix Software for recording and retrieving patient medical histories and scheduling appointments. Active learning of restorative dentistry procedures; identifying dental materials and instruments, mix/ transfer restorative materials for impressions and temporaries; managing Dental Lab procedures, take and pour impressions to make stone and plaster model, trim models to fabricate mouth guards, temporary crowns, custom impression trays; Prosthodontics Crowns, Bridges, Partials and complete Dentures, sterilizing instruments; and disinfecting operatories. At present my duties include treating patients in the capacity as a Dental Hygiene Student.
