Playing many long videos (more than 2-3 minutes) in class meetings, is not recommended, especially if they will not be commented on or used as part of an activity. The sound and image quality of such material is greatly decreased when played via Zoom or Collaborate, and do not achieve the same effect as in a physical classroom. Rather, such media should be used as prompts for pre-lab or post-lab assignments, or Blackboard Discussion Board participation.
It is not acceptable to use videos to replace live lecturing; class recordings, just like other audiovisual material can be used as supplemental teaching resources but should not be used in lieu of class meetings (lectures or labs).
A welcome or orientation video is a great way to get your students ready for the semester. in addition to removing some of the apprehension students might have, the video sets the tone and establishes instructor presence.
