Math Peer Study Groups

The Math Peer Study Groups were a joint project organized by Ariane Masuda and myself with the intention to support student’s learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, while at the same time offering opportunities for teaching practice to mathematics education students.  The study groups were funded by CUNY. We designed a study group procedure protocol, which consisted of short lesson review, followed by problem- solving “spells,”, during which groups of students worked together with peer leaders in breakout rooms. Funding was available for Spring and Fall 2020, but was not renewed after that.

In Spring 2020:

  • The Math Study Groups offered additional online support to MAT 0650CO, 1275CO and 1275 students.
  • We scheduled 5 Math Study Groups running weekly for 1.5 hours-workshops: 2 for MAT 0650CO, and 3 for both MAT 1275CO and MAT 1275.
  • Six (6) Mathematics Education students or graduates were recruited as peer leaders for the Math Study Groups
  • We provided the peer leaders with three hours of training in pedagogy and technology.
  • We coordinated the work of preparation of the mini-lessons and problems by the peer leaders.
  • We communicated with instructors and course coordinators.
  • We created a flyer to advertise the workshops among instructors and students.
  • We worked with the Communication Design team on the design of a flyer to advertise the program.

In Summer 2020:

  • Conducted workshops during the 2-day Peer-Leaders Summer training Aug 24-25, 2020 (with A. Masuda).

In Fall 2020:

  • We offered the Math Peer Study Groups again for MAT 1275CO and 1275 students.
    • Student Teaching Orientation Session, 2022, Jan.25, 2021, Jan. 2020 (with A. Masuda)
    • New Mathematics Education Student Orientation Session, every semester.
    • Conducted one day orientation for Peer Leaders (with prof. A. Masuda), Jan. 23, 2020We recruited and trained four peer leaders to facilitate the Math Study Groups.Ariane Masuda and I gave four presentations on this innovative PLTL (Peer-Led Teaching Learning) model.Workshops for Mathematics Education Students

      edTPA Workshops

edTPA is an extensive teaching portfolio, which New York State requires teacher candidates to submit to PEARSON and be assessed as successful, in order for them to receive a teaching certificate. edTPA includes long Planning, Teaching and Assessment sections, teaching video clips, and student work samples with feedback and detailed reflections. Each June since 2016, I have organized and facilitated (with Steve Watson) multiday workshops in order to help graduating and graduated mathematics education students  to prepare their edTPA portfolios for submission.

      • Facilitated an edTPA workshop, June 11-30, 2021.
      • Facilitated an edTPA workshop (with prof. S. Watson), June 17-27, 2020.
      • Facilitated an edTPA workshop (with prof. S. Watson), June 8-16, 2019.
      • Facilitated an edTPA workshop (with prof. S. Watson), June 20-25, 2018.
      • Facilitated an edTPA workshop (with prof. S. Watson), June 5-8, 2017.
      • Facilitated an edTPA workshop (with prof. S. Watson), June 7-10, 2016.

Faculty and Cooperating Teachers’s Retreat, May 29-31, 2019, City Tech.

Since the last application for promotion

In 2019, I applied and was awarded a CUNY Algebra for All grant ($20,000) to organize a 3-day retreat for ten full-time and part-time mathematics education and CTTE faculty and ten cooperating teachers focused on edTPA training.

  • Advertised the event and communicated with faculty and cooperating teachers
  • Organized and facilitated the 3-day meetings:
    • Gave a presentation on the edTPA, and
    • Facilitated discussions on the various edTPA portfolio sections and student work
    • Organized the payment of stipends for all participants
