Ms. S.P. is a 78-year-old Caucasian female that had presented to her appointment for a cleaning, alongside an Arestin placement request. Patient reports multiple prescribed and OTC medications, those being: Multivitamins, Calcium Vitamin B6 and B12, Omega-3, Atorvastatin 40mg for cholesterol, Gabapentin 400mg with Ropinirole 1mg- 4 times at night for restless leg syndrome. Prolia- injection for osteoporosis. Hydrochlorthiazide 12.5mg with Loasartan 50mg for hypertension. This patient is not know to have any allergens to Tetracycline,  Minocycline or other medications.

Once assessments were completed. We found that probing depth were generalized 3-4mm on the anteriors and 4-7mm generalized on the posteriors, with minimal BOP. There was also localized 1-5mm of recession assessed. Patient’s gingival assessment consisted of generalized pink and firm margins with moderate inflammation localized on the posteriors.

This patient’s case value was a Light/Stage II-A.

Regularly scheduled cleaning was completed, Arestin was placed last before patient dismissal. Arestin was placed in the following areas: 2ML, 3ML,3DL,and 15ML. Initial probing depths for these sites were 6mm, 5mm, 6mm, 5mm respectively. The patient was given the following instructions after the treatment:

  1. Do not touch the treated area for a week.
  2. Avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky food.
  3. Gentle brushing is allowed in the area of treatment, only 24 hours after.
  4. Do not floss or use an interdental aid for atleast ten days in the areas treated with Arestin.

The patient later came in 8 weeks later for the post-treatment readings. The readings were as followed: 4mm, 4mm, 5mm, 4mm respectively. We can see that the Arestin treatment was successful. This patient has been coming to our clinic for years now and she seems to always have good experiences with Arestin, which she always has a request for every couple of years. The patient definetely left happier this appointment.
