Homework 1: Due by class time Friday, Sep 6 (must be typed up)

Critical Listening for Music Layers

This assignment will be simplified from what we discussed in class.

Purpose: Listening Exercise—Ear Training and Aural Analysis

What to hand in: 1 page of notes typed and 1 page multi-track diagram (see #3 below)

Step-by-step Process:

1. Similar to listening and notating layers for your film scene, you will listen and notate for a music track          given in class.List and describe all of the sound sources (no music) that are used in the example

2. Describe how the sounds are organized in time on the timetable (See handout given in class or posted in       Blackboard)

3.  Make a Multi-track Timeline of all the instruments you hear

4. Describe how sounds are presented and transformed

  • Which sounds are easy to hear, and which sounds are less distinct?
  • Are the sounds presented with a sense of space?
  • Does a sound source remain constant or does it change while it is presented? – How does it change?

(See on back to continue)

5. Role or Purpose of the sounds

  • What instruments do you hear more in the foreground?  the middle ground?  the background?
  • What is the sound telling you? – How does it affect the mood or message of the video?
