Concept Maps are a Form of Thinking and Knowledge Organization

Good reflections everyone!

I view concept maps as useful ways to graphically communicate how we understand something, how we see the relationships between facts, concepts, ideas, properties….

The course concept map provides an armature of how I see the material of the course relating, and hopefully it helps you develop your own mental map of the concepts we will be discussing all semester.

Today in class we will work through the first reading content, and as we read we will work to build our own concept maps as a form of both active reading but also useful note-taking that can help deepen our understanding of the concepts we read.

Feel free to make use of the concept maps provided here: https://openlab.citytech.cuny.edu/arch1231/note-taking/

See you in class later this afternoon.

Concept Map Reflection

This purpose of the concept map is to show what architecture is about. At first it shows what its used for what and then it shows what its made up of. It shows us what we will be learning in this course by showing us the materials we will be learning about and certain things we have to consider when designing a building while also thinking about what the function or use of the building is for.

Concept Map Reflection

The concept map provides a more vivid understanding to Architecture. When someone thinks of Architecture they think of the final product, but its more than that. The concept map provides you a deeper understanding of some of the ideas to think of before the final design is approved.  Every step to creating Architecture is crucial.  Every thought process is vital and critiques can work in your favor. Creating a structure considering all the components provided by the concept map, provides reassurance that your development will perform at its full potential.

Concept Map Reflection

From the concept map I can infer that architecture is composed of many different elements which are connected together. When creating architectural space mainly for the shelter purpose, we should also be thinking about making it pleasing to the eyes and to have other functions as HVAC/water/electrical systems. The concept of the space is also interconnected with structure and materials. Different materials may be used for different structures depending on what kind of space we need to create. If designing a large open space bearing wall with steel may be a wiser choice, on the other hand while designing one story house, wood and point load frame system can be more economical choice. Thus based on the concept map, architecture is about many different choices that we need to make and combine them together to create something that will have the purpose, functionality, and aesthetics.

Concept Map Reflection

The concept map starts off by rephrasing the 3 principles of architecture stated by Vitruvius; “Firmitas, Utilitas, and Venustas.”  These crucial points all connect to to the word space because how we form space is an essential point to pay attention to while designing. When it comes to materials and structures on the concept map it shows more sub-categories, this is because having an extensive knowledge on different types of materials and structure systems can not only allow a person to be more creative with their designs but also  help optimize its durability and functionality.

Bryan Mendoza

My understanding of the concept map is that architecture has a beautiful complexion, and its made of different important keys that make a structure come together.  the concept map shows that architecture is a way to express creativity, lifestyle and imagination. Every detail matters from how we create the living space to what materials we use, to ensure that the structure is functional in every way. This is a guide to create a successful structure that is functional, strong, and beautiful.
