In today’s presentation, the group which gives me more impression about was the group who introduce Myrtle Ave. Their presentation showed us a short history of the transportation of old New York City. Use the MTA train line map and the old photo of the street view to explain the development of the transportation method in new york city. Give me some information that I have never known before. The other group also covers some information about Metro-Tech Center which last class doesn’t show. Such as the group who talk about the economy of Metro-Tech has introduced the organization of “FRUEE”.
In the Wednesday presentation, all our classmates have a good presentation, I can learn different research skills from each group. group 1 has the slideshow which highlights the referent text to remind themselves of the important part of the research. group 2 was using photography to compare the change of zoning each period. group 3 uses the data to tell us about the economy in their research. and the last group was using the map data to analyze and compare the population, land use at different times. in conclusion, I do not only get the information about MetroTech also learn how to use a different source to present the information to our audience.
Changing tells us the story of the past, improve the present, and create the future; it happens all the time and the entire world. From this tour, we are observing the change of the surrounding area of Metrotech center which located in downtown Brooklyn from 1924 to the current view. From the map of 1924, we can determine that downtown Brooklyn is a high-density residential area at that moment. Tillary Street expands to two-way traffic road from the small street which only for one way running street by occupying McLaughlin Park area. Later, we try to find the street adjacent to polytech high school, and we realize that the loading dock of MetroTech was truncate the street at Johnson Street. The tiny houses which located of eastern Flatbush avenue become modern high-level building since the zoning changes. In the east of Flatbush Avenue, most buildings built of steel, and most buildings in the west of Flatbush avenue built of brick. Also when we walk in the Flatbush avenue, there is much traffic because it connects to Manhattan bridge.
Moreover, the city tries to create more greening on the road. We saw a small rest park and chairs in the middle of the road. We do not think that is a good idea because many cars are running on the road, and it is dangerous. Maybe it could not make people enjoy the rest. While we walk forward to Willoughby street, there are new structures under construction. When we look through the west, we can reach the location of the borough hall, and the east is the location of the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument.
As a conclusion, changing is a way to let us improve, tell us the achievable about our world. Also, we are glad to see there are few landmark buildings still exist in Metrotech center areas, Like Brooklyn Church Bridge, the Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn, or the interior of a restaurant. Changing also makes us think about how the historical still exist, how to relate to or connect to new modern building and the environment. We would not stop change, but try getting better in the future.
As an Architecture student, we always have a site analysis assignment before we do the architect design. Our first assignment Neighborhood analysis is similar to site analysis, both assignments need so the research of the history of the place we visit. However, if the site analysis is focused on the specific place, the Neighborhood analysis is more about the entire community.
In the Neighborhood analysis, we use the voice memos to record everything that we see during we walking in the area, this activity is kind of interesting to me, the main reason was I never have experience about voice memos, so this requirement is fresh to me. On the other hand every day I walk around my neighborhood, I am not always paying attention about what happens in the area(except the construction work), if the assignment requires change by video recording instead of the voice memos, I believe I would holding the camera and walking on the street unpurposed. By using voice memos, I have to observe everything that happens at the moment, and we can find something that we never pay attention in daily during the observation.
This assignment gives a chance to learn about my neighborhood change by the time, and the voice memos help me do observation in the detail. I appreciate this assignment give me a great experience that never has before.
