My beliefs about nursing are that nursing is essentially about caring for other people. In order to properly care for people in today’s health care environment a nurse has to consider how to care about various types of people. Today’s patient population may be young, old, single, married, with children, without children, rich, poor, gay, straight etc. Therefore, caring for other people means learning enough about different types of people to be able to provide care not only based on what the doctor has ordered, but also caring for people based on their individual needs of care.
Due to my beliefs about nursing, my philosophy of nursing practice emphasizes the necessity of being client or patient centered. In order to do this, I feel that nursing practice in everyday interaction with clients must consider such things as culture, family life, status in society, life circumstances, in other words, all factors that affect a client’s living experiences because these experiences have a direct effect on health and healing. It is my position that no one theoretical model can or should be used in nursing practice because of the dynamics of events which occur during practice on a daily basis.
