About Me

My name is Maria Garcia and I  am from the Bed-Stuy area of Brooklyn. I am a mother of two boys who give me purpose everyday to go on. I had both of my children young which hindered me from going to school, my priority was trying to build a stable home for them first. Once I was settled I was able to focus on building more of myself up to where I want be. That road to my upward progression really has been a battle, its still hard but I find that it does get easier everyday because I am learning and growing from my successes and mistakes as well from others. I always wanted to help people since I was young by working in the medical field, being that I have been on my own for a long time I have realized I had to be a little bit more realistic with my career path. I chose the Human Services field starting at Borough of Manhattan Community College and graduated with my A.S. degree and I am currently attending New York City College of Technology majoring in Human Services, graduating with my B.S. in Spring 2016 . I chose this major because I know how it feels to need help and not know the right questions to ask, who to go to, fear of being turned away, and especially feeling like no one understands what I am going through…but I do. I initially would like to work with young mothers to help guide and strengthen them as they grow  physically, mentally, and emotionally.  I have dreams of helping young parents (specifically females) to follow  their dreams and grow mentally and realize their potential for greater things to come. I would like to work in some sort of setting that provides resources for various needs such as educational, financial and social services. I would like to counsel, advise and be like a go to person for young parents so they can have a caring support system to better themselves while care for there child. Some of the challenges young parents face are educational, economical, depression, and relationship issues.  I would like to be part of the helping process to change the stigma for all young parents to get the help and attention they may need.
