  • Counseling Methods-HUS3501

I was really excited to take counseling methods because I felt I was ready to start working with people one on one. Some of the work I was very interested to learn about was active listening, body language, tone, open ended and closed questions, paraphrasing, summarizing and note taking. As I went into doing my recorded transcript I realized that it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be to implement these practices all at once. I learned that I needed to work on my listening skills because I was listening and wanting to comment as I listened to the person. It was hard for me not to cut the person off and have my input or ask another question. As I worked on these things I also tried to work on actively listening rather than letting my mind wonder off into what I want to say and take in everything so I can be prepared to continue when the person was finished talking.

  • Professional Internship I-HUS4701

I work with adults with mental disabilities such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. I counsel at least four individuals a week, this has allowed me to really understand more than what the person is just saying to me verbally. I also run three groups that allow me to implements skills I have learned in group work such as openness, self disclosure, trust, communication, support, and respect. Running these groups have made me aware that I needed to work on being a team leader and having more confidence in the work I am implementing

  •  Resource Development-HUS4803

Taking this course has helped me to understand the dynamics of running a non-profit organization and more into putting together an event. I am still not sure what field I plan on working in but I see that counseling is imperative to working with any population as I go forward in my career in this field of studies.

  • Speech-SPE100

By taking this course it was my first learning experience in professionally speaking in front of people. Even though I am still working on building my speaking skills I have learned that I need to practice, know what point I really want to make and to just be confident in my own words.
