Stu­dents are re­quired to find in­tern­ship op­por­tu­ni­ties of ap­prox­i­mately eight hours per week at an In­dus­try seg­ment site ap­proved by the De­part­ment In­tern­ship in­struc­tor. Ap­proved com­pa­nies in­clude ad­ver­tis­ing agen­cies, graphic de­sign firms, cor­po­rate de­sign, Pub­lish­ing art de­part­ments, Print­ing de­sign or mar­ket­ing de­part­ments, pho­tog­ra­phy or il­lus­tra­tion stu­dios and TV or mul­ti­me­dia pro­duc­tion com­pa­nies. Stu­dents will be re­quired to keep a learn­ing jour­nal of their in­tern­ship in the form of a blog using Open­lab. A por­tion of the class will be de­voted to pre­sent­ing and shar­ing ex­pe­ri­ences with class­mates. Stu­dents will learn how to as­sess their tal­ents, up­date their re­sume, and mar­ket them­selves and their work through using var­i­ous plat­forms in­clud­ing so­cial media. Stu­dents will be re­quired to setup and main­tain at least two so­cial media net­works such as: Face­book, LinkedIn, Twit­ter, In­sta­gram, and Pin­ter­est.

This course is a prac­ti­cal in­tro­duc­tion to the field of il­lus­tra­tion. Focus will be places on process work and pro­fes­sional prac­tices, pre­sented within con­tem­po­rary and his­tor­i­cal con­text. Course in­cludes pro­jects and lec­tures in a va­ri­ety of il­lus­tra­tion gen­res in­clud­ing: prod­uct de­sign and ad­ver­tis­ing, sto­ry­board, book il­lus­tra­tion, ed­i­to­r­ial il­lus­tra­tion, and in­sti­tu­tional il­lus­tra­tion. A va­ri­ety of ma­te­ri­als will be in­tro­duced through lec­tures and demon­stra­tions for use on as­sign­ments such as: pen­cil, pen and ink, brush, col­ored pen­cil, brush and paint, and col­lage. Crit­i­cal con­cepts such as: Con­cep­tual De­vel­op­ment, Work­ing on As­sign­ment, Com­po­si­tion, Con­trast, Value, Point of View, and Color the­ory will be in­tro­duced.

This course will ex­plore the foun­da­tional con­cepts of light and ex­po­sure in pho­tog­ra­phy. Stu­dents will de­velop vi­sual lit­er­acy as well as fram­ing and com­po­si­tional skills. Stu­dents will be­come ac­quainted with a wide range of con­tem­po­rary pho­tog­ra­phers and gain an un­der­stand­ing of how pho­to­graphic style trans­forms sub­ject mat­ter into mean­ing. Using pro­fes­sional light­ing equip­ment and cam­eras, the stu­dent will gain hands-on ex­pe­ri­ence cap­tur­ing dig­i­tal im­ages in the stu­dio as well as on lo­ca­tion. Stu­dents will also learn pro­fes­sional meth­ods and soft­ware to man­age, process and print dig­i­tal im­ages.

Graphic Design Principles I

Graphic De­sign Prin­ci­ples I

This basic de­sign and color the­ory course ex­plores graphic com­mu­ni­ca­tion through the un­der­stand­ing of the el­e­ments and prin­ci­ples of de­sign, as well as the de­sign process, in­clud­ing idea de­vel­op­ment through final ex­e­cu­tion. Stu­dents de­velop basic skills in two-di­men­sional de­sign, color and con­tent cre­ation while em­ploy­ing the de­sign process of re­search, sketch­ing and ex­per­i­men­ta­tion. Com­mu­ni­ca­tion de­sign­ers use the con­cepts ex­plored in this course in dis­ci­plines such as ad­ver­tis­ing, graphic de­sign, web de­sign, il­lus­tra­tion, broad­cast de­sign, pho­tog­ra­phy, and game de­sign.
