This course is an ex­plo­ration of ab­stract ar­chi­tec­tural de­sign the­ory as an ex­pres­sion of three-di­men­sional space. The cre­ation of com­pre­hen­sive ar­chi­tec­tural de­sign pro­jects are de­vel­oped fol­low­ing a build­ing pro­gram and in­cor­po­rat­ing el­e­ments of site, en­clo­sure, struc­ture, ma­te­r­ial and tech­nol­ogy. De­sign con­cepts and vo­cab­u­lary are in­tro­duced and strength­ened through de­sign pro­jects.

This course is an exploration of abstract architectural design theory as an expression of three-dimensional space. The creation of comprehensive architectural design projects are developed following a building program and incorporating elements of site, enclosure, structure, material and technology. Design concepts and vocabulary are introduced and strengthened through design projects.

A broad in­tro­duc­tion to the his­tory, the­ory, and prac­tice of his­toric preser­va­tion. This course will en­cour­age un­der­stand­ing and crit­i­cal thought about the prin­ci­ples and as­sump­tions un­der­ly­ing the prac­tice of his­toric preser­va­tion, in­clud­ing preser­va­tion law, preser­va­tion plan­ning, adap­tive use, de­sign is­sues, and pub­lic his­tory.

A broad introduction to the history, theory, and practice of historic preservation. This course will encourage understanding and critical thought about the principles and assumptions underlying the practice of historic preservation, including preservation law, preservation planning, adaptive use, design issues, and public history.
