This be­gin­ning pho­tog­ra­phy course ex­plores the foun­da­tional con­cepts of light and ex­po­sure. Using dSLR cam­eras, pro­fes­sional light­ing equip­ment and soft­ware*, the stu­dent de­vel­ops com­po­si­tional skills and the abil­ity to con­trol pho­to­graphic style to cre­ate vi­su­ally en­gag­ing pho­tographs. *if this course is being held on­line due to an emer­gency, stu­dents will meet learn­ing out­comes using al­ter­nate tools and equip­ment.

This beginning photography course explores the foundational concepts of light and exposure. Using dSLR cameras, professional lighting equipment and software*, the student develops compositional skills and the ability to control photographic style to create visually engaging photographs. *if this course is being held online due to an emergency, students will meet learning outcomes using alternate tools and equipment.

This course will offer an in-depth in­tro­duc­tion to com­mu­ni­ca­tion de­sign the­ory, ex­am­in­ing the­o­ret­i­cal per­spec­tives of de­sign prac­tice within the larger dis­course of de­sign and vi­sual cul­ture. Com­mu­ni­ca­tion mod­els, the na­ture of rep­re­sen­ta­tion, the di­men­sions of con­text and semi­otics will be ex­plored through crit­i­cal read­ings from key doc­u­ments writ­ten be­tween the early decades of the twen­ti­eth cen­tury and the pre­sent.

This course will offer an in-depth introduction to communication design theory, examining theoretical perspectives of design practice within the larger discourse of design and visual culture. Communication models, the nature of representation, the dimensions of context and semiotics will be explored through critical readings from key documents written between the early decades of the twentieth century and the present.

Prin­ci­ples of three-di­men­sional de­sign. Course cov­ers an analy­sis of form and space. Top­ics in­clude: hol­low forms both geo­met­ric and or­ganic; ar­chi­tec­tonic or­ga­ni­za­tion of space; light and shadow; geo­met­ric solids; the mod­u­lar unit; form and struc­ture in na­ture; lin­ear forms with mem­branes; move­ment. Ap­pli­ca­tions to pack­ag­ing, ar­chi­tec­ture, sculp­ture and en­vi­ron­men­tal de­sign and graph­ics. Ma­te­ri­als and in­her­ent prop­er­ties gov­ern­ing their use in form and space.

Principles of three-dimensional design. Course covers an analysis of form and space. Topics include: hollow forms both geometric and organic; architectonic organization of space; light and shadow; geometric solids; the modular unit; form and structure in nature; linear forms with membranes; movement. Applications to packaging, architecture, sculpture and environmental design and graphics. Materials and inherent properties governing their use in form and space.

Strate­gies for cre­at­ing pro­fes­sional il­lus­tra­tions based on a ro­tat­ing se­ries of top­ics rel­e­vant to con­tem­po­rary pro­fes­sional il­lus­tra­tion. Top­ics and strate­gies in­clude: dig­i­tal con­cept art (pro­duc­tion art, card art, genre, etc.), Chil­dren’s Pic­ture Book Il­lus­tra­tion (re­search, pitch, mar­ket­ing, lay­out, etc.), ed­i­to­r­ial. Strategies for creating professional illustrations based on a rotating series of topics relevant to contemporary professional illustration. Topics and strategies include: digital concept art (production art, card art, genre, etc.), Children’s Picture Book Illustration (research, pitch, marketing, layout, etc.), editorial. This course in­tro­duces stu­dents to core con­cepts in the media field in­clud­ing color the­ory, de­sign and pro­duc­tion ter­mi­nol­ogy, re­pro­duc­tion processes, file for­mats and sub­strates. Lec­tures will pro­vide stu­dents with a his­tor­i­cal per­spec­tive of the media field as well as dis­cussing cur­rent prac­tices and fu­ture trends.

This course introduces students to core concepts in the media field including color theory, design and production terminology, reproduction processes, file formats and substrates.
