Sean Michael Landers’s Profile
Vanishing technology, science fiction as theory, speculative design and the technological imagination
Sean Michael indulges in speculative expeditions into the technological imagination. His recent work follows three major strands:
• Investigation of the ways that technologies vanish — receding into obsolescence, sinking into the infrastructural, or becoming transparent through ubiquity.
• Speculative thinking and the design of futures/the futures of design. How can we use the relation between the speculative and the actual to build the kinds of worlds we would want to live in?
• “Recreative practice” – a proposed research method where media archaeology, speculative design and a material-cultural semiotics of technology are synthesized through a material and semiotic practice of bottom-up investigation and re-making significant technical objects. How can intentional future-making can happen through intentional past-making?
My Courses
MTEC1101-HD88 – Emerging Media Foundations – Fall 2024
This course is an introduction to emerging, interactive multi-media technology with a focus on interdisciplinary, project-based, cooperative learning. Students will be immersed in the protocols and processes of emerging and interactive media design, including: idea development, research, documentation, presentation, prototyping, and production, which will serve them in the face of rapid changes in technology. Students will explore basic theoretical and applied concepts of audio, visual, haptic, immersive, sensory and interaction design through creative group projects, visiting professionals, field trips and online documentation of their work.
